Feature Request: Navigation support for Ice Skating

Did share this as "Idea" to Garmin, but adding it also here.

Apparently Ice Skate doesn't support navigation reasons unknown to me. People do things like "Tour skating", where one would like to use course to support the route planning when skating. Now have to use some different activity as for reasons unknown to me, there is no navigation option if I do "Ice Skating" -> "Outdoor".

Same thing did seem to be also in my Forerunner 955, so at least these are on sync on this, but meh :(

  • Moste likely because navigation isn't used by ice skaters?

  • So I'm not a ice skater? Based on what? Do you even know what is Tour Skating? Tour skating - Wikipedia

But here's the activity that I needed to do as a run, maybe it helps you to understand. Garmin Connect
One could argue on that, just follow the shore line, but it's not exactly following it either. But planning it helps to know the distance one is about expecting and how much is still left, which I already find beneficial.

But then like this Garmin Connect there you can not just follow shore. Of course you can't always go exactly where you one has planned to do, but I still find beneficial from the navigation.

And like, it has required extra work to hide the navigation as usually the navigation is available. But you can do a workout in Ice Skating? How would that work? I see more benefits from navigation than doing an ice skating workout.

  • Yes, i know what Iceskating is, and yes we do tour skating, i am from the Netherlands https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfstedentocht

Just start an route in the hiking activity and after uploading change it to iceskating.

  • Yes, there's a workaround for it, using different sport, but this post was about the missing navigation from Ice Skating. I would rather have the navigation there, than use workarounds.

But probably will need to continue using the workaround for years to come if one looks how long it took Garmin to even add the Ice Skating.

I'm somewhat doubtful that event is ever held again, but would be nice to be wrong.

  • I miss this feature as well, on my Enduro 3. I never do ice skating indoors, I do it on (large) lakes and would like to see the map on the watch instead of fiddling with the cell phone.

Why not make it possible to use the map, without needing to select XC skiing or something else instead?

Some models already indeed do offer the switch Outdoors/Indoors at Ice Skating. If MK3 does not have this feature, consider suggesting it to Garmin at Share Ideas | Garmin. In the meantime, use any other outdoor activity to record your skating, and then change the type to Ice Skating later, in Garmin Connect.

  • MK3 has the Outdoors/Indoors but it does like nothing here. Have you even tried that? There is no "Navigation" menu in the activity still.

One can see the map, but just not with a course or navigation enabled. If doesn't have map, then it's just matter of editing data fields and adding map field to the activity.

Also got really pissed at the workaround as used Trail running and it messed the stats badly. And I have shared the idea of them at least 2 times.. also contacted support, but they told to share ideas..

Like the watch advertises it has navigation, but then you can't use that feature if you select some sports from where they have decided to disable the navigation without any reason/logic I can understand. Like "Navigation" is in Kayak, but not in Openwater swim or in Ice skating. Same places and routes you can do with those sports and same way the courses could be beneficial.

I have tried to add a «map» data screen, but when adding a data screen I can only select among «Custom Data», «HR Zone Gauge» and «inReach». For other activities like road cycling there is a «Map» data screen I can seelct, but not for Ice Skating.

I have also tried to make a «Custom Data» screen with just one «Data Field». But when selecting what to show in this field, there is no map available. The options are «Connect IQ Fields», «Timer Fields», «Distance Fields», «Speed Fields», «Heart Rate Fields», «Other Fields, «Graphical» and «Charts». I looked into all of these and found nothing relevant.

I haven’t found any Outdoors/Indoors switch for Ice Skating, other than Satelites which I changed from Off to Auto Select so that it will track my position.

I found it funny that I can also adjust the «Map Settings» and «Map Layers» - while it’s impossible to enable the map data screen…

There is something odd on your watch.
    1. On my Descent MK3i with latest FW when I'm starting IceSkating activity I got prompt regarding Indoor or Outdoor activity.
    2. I have no problem to add MAP as data field to IceSkating activity.

I suggest check it again and if it still will be as you described contact Garmin support.
It of course will not solve lack of navigation in IceSkating.

  • When I start the Ice Skating activity it says "Outdoor" below, so I guess that's in order. If I scroll down to Activity Options I find "Data screens" (with the 3 options I listed above, i.e. no Map to find there), "Map settings" (where I have selected quite standard settings), and "Map Layers" (TopoActive). No Map field to find.

So, I find no map view, regardless of whether I try to set it up on the watch or in Garmin Connect.

This is Enduro 3 with the latest FW
