Zwift and recovery time?

OK, I can't be the only person with the new Descent mk3i that is also addicted to cycling on Zwift... but I've noticed that my Zwift activities are not increasing recovery time at all.

I've got Zwift integrated with Garmin Connect, the activities come across and the watch will evaluate the virtual ride for training load impact, etc - but the ride doesn't affect recovery time at all.  Anyone else seeing this?  Maybe I've missed some config somewhere on the new watch?

  • Same for me on Epix2..yesterday was my second ride and that's what I noticed that is missing - everything else is there.

  • I've opened a support ticket for the recovery time not calculating.  Also noticed the calculation of intensity minutes, etc. is intermittent with these activities as well.

Recovery Time and Intensity Minutes are processed by the watch in real time, not by Zwift, and also not by the app on import. It means you have to wear your watch during the activity, and preferably recording the activity with it while having the chest strap connected to it too (if you use one for Zwift). Otherwise you may get unexpected results - 1st by not using the same HRM as data source, and 2nd because when no activity s being recorded, the watch samples the HR in low power mode much less frequently than when an activity is being recorded.

  • That's fair, but I use and wear my HRM-PRO through which I get HR data ported back to Garmin Connect. My Epix2 is on my left hand with no activity running as I can start an indoor activity but I don't think I can connect the watch to anything - could it find the Wahoo Kickr Core as an external sensor? If so, then I suppose I have to unlink porting data/workouts from Zwift to Garmin Connect as it would have them duplicate...but not sure if that would work. I see that other folks somehow got Recovery time with no hassle but not myself (and apparently OP).

  • If you keep wearing your Epix 2 (the Primary Wearable Device) with the internal HRM enabled, then the HR, the IM, and other HR-based metrics come from the watch, not from HRM-Pro.

  • Incorrect.  These values are not only computed in real time.  Double-recording the activity is a workaround, and generates larger issues with training load or other apps like Apple Health, Strada, etc.  Please do not misinform.

It worked as designed with my Fenix 5 and Edge 840.  With the Descent Mk3i, it is no longer functioning.

The workflow is, ride on Zwift, it finishes the activity and loads to Garmin (HR, PWR, CAD, everything included).  The device (watch or head unit) syncs with connect, imports the activity then calculates recovery impact, intensity, etc.  The device then, on next sync with Connect, shares back the activity with the updated information.

This is how it has been since Garmin officially included support for Zwift, TrainerRoad and other activities and the processing of training metrics based on them. (Garmin Training Status Now Includes Zwift, TrainerRoad ...DC Rainmakerhttps://www.dcrainmaker.com › 2021/06 › garmin-trai...)

With the Descent Mk3i current SW, and it appears other SW versions on other watches such as Adrian's Epix2, this functionality is impacted.

    Thx

  • ... see the HRM-Pro FAQ for more details:

NOTE: The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus will only connect to the watch while actively recording an activity. If you are wearing the watch and not recording an activity, the watch will still be the primary wearable device. However, the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus will have step records (and other wellness data) for the time frame that the watch was off the wrist.

  • These values are not only computed in real time

I did not refer to Training Load, but specifically to the comment about Intensity Minutes in the post I was replying to. As for the Recovery Time (which is the topic of this thread), I am uncertain whether imported activities are supposed to have any effect or not. Unlike at Training Load where Zwift is specifically mentioned, at Recovery Time, the documentation only speaks about compatible devices, and no 3rd party apps are mentioned there:

  • I also noticed it today on my 945 LTE and Zwift. Training Status gets updated without issues, but Training Readiness is not (Recovery Time - 0h).

    I'm sure this worked before.

  • I've tested the following last night:

    - Started the workout from Zwift and from my Epix2 at the same time, Zwift sync enabled to Strava and Garmin Connect (GC). From the watch I selected Bike Indoor which directly prompted me to sync with the bike trainer (Wahoo Kickr core).

    - Randomly glimpsed at both during the workout - all seemed fine

    - Ended both workouts at the same time

    - Data sync from Zwift to Strava and GC was successful, of course with duplicated with almost identical data but minor differences:

-- GC provided Recovery time and strokes, no elevation, so I copied it from the Zwift workout

-- Zwift provided elevation and no strokes in GC

I made sure to copy the relevant Zwift data into the Garmin workout and then deleted the Zwift workout from GC, ending with a single workout in GC and I think proper training metrics and data related to TE, power, recovery, etc. I think that works for now, since Zwift doesn't give me recovery which is important to me since I do weekly cycling 3x + weights 3x at the moment.
