Stop dive mode automatically starting (E.g. while pool training for freediving)

I can't seem to find a way to stop the watch going into dive mode automatically. It's very frustrating when training in the pool and wanting to use a simple feature such as the stopwatch but you cant as each lap you do underwater the watch starts dive mode. It would be very good if you could select "Pool Training" or something similar before getting into the pool to stop this or am I missing something here? Yes I've tried the pool activity and it just pauses and goes to dive mode as soon as you dive.

This seems like a pretty basic feature to have, I just want to be able to set the stopwatch so I can do my own tables etc without the dive mode getting triggered.

I've checked the App store and I can't find any activity that would do this. Am I going to have to build one myself?

Hoping I'm missing something but looks like others have brought this up in the past with no real solution and I have friends with the same issue so clearly not the only one wanting this.

PS. I actually have the MK2s (smaller version) from what I understand it's the same but smaller watch face and battery.

Cheers,
Matt

  • In this mode the Activity register  in Garmin connect the depth too?

  • I do not own the MK2, but on my Instinct 2, i use a Connect IQ Data Field app for registering the depth. It uses the barometer data. Unfortunately Garmin trims the barometric data at depths greater than 3m, so it is limited just to that depth. For the pool training it is usually sufficient, though. On MK2, the CIQ Data Field app could use directly the data from the depth sensor, which would not have that limitation.

  • Thanks Trux, I train in a 3-meter pool, can you give more details about the custom activity and how to handle the immersions as laps?

For me, the auto dive mode starts even if I started a Pool Swimming activity before going into the water Expressionless

There is nothing special on the customization - just re-arranging the data fields so that they are better readable (using screens with less data fields in bigger fonts), putting the data that interest me easier accessible, and adding the depth data field (a CIQ app using the standard pressure sensor, since my watch does no have a built-in depthmeter).

Cannot help with that much, since I do not own the Descent, so cannot test it, but according to the documentation (i.e. Keeping the Descent Series From Going into Dive Mode After Rapid Descent in Altitude | Garmin Customer Support), starting an activity should prevent the automatic start of the Dive Activity. You may want to search the manual or contact the Support, if no other Descent user comes to help you here. In the manual, I see for example that you can enable the Pool Dive Mode, which prevents logging the immersions as dives (Descent Mk2/Mk2s Owners Manual - Using the Pool Dive Mode (garmin.com)), but there may be other settings as well. I really do not know.

    • Yes as Trux mentioned starting the activity should stop dive mode from starting. Make sure you actually start it after opening the activity. You can create custom activities on the watch adding all the data screens you want to see when the activity is running. This can be done by copying another activity like pool swim and editing from there or just starting from scratch.  Example below of a custom one I made for Freedive in the pool. I use the lap button for counting the laps. You can also add workouts from within the connect app on the phone such as CO2 tables so the watch beeps on your send off time.
