G1 shut off during dive

My brand new G1 solar just shut off during a freedive to 20 meters in freshwater.

Two days later the same happened to my friends G1 non solar.

Both watches just shut off, forgot the dive data of the last dive and could easily powered back on.

Posting it on reddit and found another stranger who claimed the same happened to them during a scuba dive.

Anyone else ever encountered something like that?

I mean wtf? I can understand a faulty product and hardware failure but this seems to be software related and is extremely worrying for a dive computer.

Given that the watch has just had a major firmware update, can you indicate which version of the firmware you were running?

Yeah that is dangerous. My Descent G1 restarted with "Garmin Triangle" during surfing activity two weeks ago, forgot data. Then again today during walking activity. It is worry some if it happens during dive.

May I know if the software version you had when it happened 6.19?

This look similar to the restart issue on Instinct 2. And I have a dive trip coming, very soon.

Note: The Instinct 2 series is running different software altogether compared to the Dive watches.

I'm not sure that's correct - my understanding is that the Descent uses the same software base but with the dive functionality 'added' to it - hence why the version numbers correspond.

I think I know who added it, as I want to bring this to their attention.

Can those of you with the issue file a product support ticket so they can proceed with the proper procedure?

I do not have the issue on my unit so far (touch wood) so I can't write a ticket without the data they need to pull to investigate.

From the DM reply, I am sure they will take the report seriously. Please do so if your unit facing the same issue.

That's interesting, though given that Garmin have previously stated that the Descent G1 uses the Instinct 2 codebase I'd still question their 'different software altogether' statement. If Garmin insist that the G1 shares no code with the Instinct 2 then they've done an excellent job of replicating the UX (including bugs).

I bought my G1 for a two-week dive trip to the Red Sea at the end of this month rather than pay for a battery replacement for my ageing Suunto dive computer. If it lets me down when I need it most then I'll be asking Garmin for a refund (I bought direct). Still, I'm hopeful that the 8.64 firmware will have fixed the issues others have encountered so far.

Hey all, it looks like we have only had a couple contacts for this issue so I would like to work with you to get it escalated. Please pm me if you are experiencing the issue and let me know what activity types your G1 has restarted during and more importantly if it has restarted or shut down during a dive.
