MARQ gen 1 GPS inaccurate in swim

can someone in the UK help with the best settings for OWS using a Marq gen 1? I have been extremely disappointed in the accuracy/performance of my Marq in this area and can see that less expensive Garmin wearables seem to have a better accuracy. Having moved my ecosystem to Garmin after being with polar for a few years this inaccuracy is even more apparent as my old v800 is still mush more accurate especially in the route plotting (also less distance errors on known courses).

Any tips or comments over similar issues and solutions would be appreciated

Best thing to do is to contact Garmin Support. I've never had much joy with the Marq gen1 in the open water, irrespective of the settings. It's only recently that I've started getting good results from the Gen2. As you note, other Garmin watches generally have better outcomes in the open water.
