Incomplete Map in Open-Water Swim During Multisport

I have two different triathlons in multisport with the same issue: the open-water tracks the distance, strokes, time, pace, etc just fine, but the GPS maps are... incomplete? No issues on the bike or run. And this issue is not replicated in a single sport open-water swim activity, only multisport with open-water swim. Here are two examples:

Example 1, Software: 26.00: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11315331880/1

Example 2, Software: 22.10: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/9351804473

Is this a bug? Thanks.

  • Interesting you have not seen this in a swim on its own. How many times have you used the watch for OWS on its own? Would be worth talking with Garmin Support directly.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. Probably at least a dozen OWS I can recall with no obvious issues.

  • Might be worthwhile checking back at some of those swims and looking at the map especially if you have swum the same course more than once. Distance might well be tracked ok but the presence of straight lines might suggest the mapping could be off.

  • Apologies for the confusion: the image on the right in my original post was the course that the OWS route should have followed. The image on the left is what my MARQ tracked for comparison. That was for the first example. The second example is similar, though I don't have an image of the course to compare it to.

My other OWS swims seem quite accurate to the route I took. Here are a few examples:

I can reach out to garmin Support, just did not know if anyone else had similar experiences.

  • Reach out to Garmin Support as it will be interesting to see what they have to say. Overall I've been less than impressed with the performance of the Marq in the open water. The Gen2 doesn't fare any better. By way of reference this is a comparison swim between a Marq Gen 2 and and Epix earlier this month. The Marq is the red line. I've had better outcomes but never as good as other watches.

  • That’s interesting, thanks for sharing. It seems with your experience and mine, the Marq and Marq 2 cut off quickly into the swim? I’ll test mine again in single activity vs MS within the next week.

  • Doesn't happen every time though. I've had swims with complete maps but they've been off for distance. When looking at the pace graph it's easy to see where the watch is getting data using swim dead reckoning as there's lots of straight lines on the graph as you can see in the plot.

To update this comment. There's been a significant change in the performance of the Marq Athlete Gen 2 in the open water. I've had 5 or 6 swims recently where the track and distance have all been good. I'm very optimistic that the tracking in OWS has finally been resolved for the Marq Gen 2. I'll have to see if I can dig out my Marq Gen 1 for a comparison this coming weekend.

  • After some further swimming, it seems that my Open Water Swim map/route is inaccurate only when adding it to a multisport activity. If I do the open water swim activity on it's own, the map still shows the crazy zigzagging lines we expect, but the map/route is directionally correct.

When It is part of a multisport activity, the map/route is often shorter and incomplete, totally inaccurate. It is worth noting, that the distance and other stats are correct, best I can tell, which is the important thing. Here are two examples. The orange line on the map is the actual route for both swims, you can see the open water swim that was part of a multsport is wrong:

Open Water Swim (on it's own)
Open Water Swim (on it's own)

Open Water Swim (part of multisport Activity)
Open Water Swim (part of multisport Activity)

That was reported to Garmin sometime back. Am I right in saying it’s really only the track that looks nasty; distance is ok?
I haven’t done a swim run or triathlon for a while so hadn’t checked to see if what you’ve experienced is still the case. I’ll make a point of checking this morning if I swim. Not that it’s any benefit but this was seen on other watches too when using a swim as part of a Multisport activity.

Definitely worth hitting up Garmin Support
