Pulse Ox Set to All Day - Isn't All Day

This has been an ongoing issue since before the 'outage.'

I have my MARQ Expedition set to All-Day Pulse Ox in Garmin Connect and on the device itself:

However, since May 2019, when I purchased the watch, it does not track Pulse Ox all day. Instead, it only tracks at night, morning, and evening. There is always a huge multi-hour gap during the day:

I'd like to point out that this is independent of activity (unlike stress). In the above image, during that gap, I was mostly sitting at a desk at work. In the evening from 18:00-20:30 I was chopping wood and got pulse ox readings. I also don't think that it is because I am at 100% saturation either, as this is consistent for over a year and at varying altitudes.

Here is what it looks like over a multi-day period:

Heart rate, respiration, etc are all tracked regularly and consistently.

Pulse Ox is actually very important for me since I often engage in activities at high altitude. I'm much more concerned with this reading during activities than when asleep, as I don't have sleep apnea.

Am I doing something wrong?

  • It happened to me as well that a synchronized setting somehow got to an inconsistent state and regardless what the interface/watch shows it did not do anything or even the opposite way, the watch showed the setting was on but the function did not work.

Try to turn off the all-day PulseOX on GC, sync, turn it on again, sync. Then do the same on the watch, turn PulseOX off, sync, turn it on, sync. Somewhere during this process it should be fixed.

If it still not working, hard reboot the watch by pressing the Light button until it turns off. Then turn it on.

If it still not working, I am afraid you might need to do a factory reset.

If it still not working contact Garmin Support because something probably wrong with the hardware.

What firmware versions do you use, btw?

  • Thanks, @crt_hun - very helpful!

So far, five days later, no luck:

I've tried everything except the dreaded factory reset. I'll reach out to Garmin Support and see if they have any recommendations. I'll update the thread if they suggest anything else.

  • What I have noticed when taking manual Pulse Ox readings, is that it doesn't like any movement (I have to be sat dead still with my arm rested on a table or similar and not move during the measurement).  So I'm just wondering if the lack of Pulse Ox measurement during the day is simply that you are up and about and when the watch attempts to poll the Pulse Ox during the day (every 15 minutes or so as I recall from a support page) it always fails s you are likely not sat completely still at that time.

  • This is independent of activity. In the first image of the post, during that gap, I was mostly sitting at a desk at work. In the evening from 18:00-20:30 I was chopping wood and got pulse ox readings. I generally exercise in the mornings and get readings, but during the day, when I am sitting at a desk, I get none.

  • This is most likely due to movement.  I will say the hardware probably isn't the problem given that you're getting some readings.

  • Thanks for the reply, but I’ve debunked that. Activity has no correlation.

  • From the manual

"Remain motionless for up to 30 seconds.

NOTE: If you are too active for the watch to get a pulse oximeter reading, a message appears instead of a percentage. You can check again after several minutes of inactivity. For best results, hold the arm wearing the device at heart level while the device reads your blood oxygen saturation."

in other words as well as making sure you have the watch correctly fitted you need to remain motionless when taking Pulse Ox readings. I'm guessing you do not remain motionless throughout the day.

  • Just got readings while running 7 miles. I guarantee when I am sitting at my desk later, not moving nearly as much, I won’t get readings. Please don’t throw the manual at me.

  • Very odd that you are getting Pulse Ox readings whilst you are running; you absolutely should not!  The Pulse Ox measurement is too sensitive to movement to give meaningful numbers whilst you are even vaguely active.  I've never been able to get my MARQ or Fenix 6X to give me Pulse Ox readings when I'm awake and moving.  By design, it should only successfully record Pulse Ox values when you are asleep or sitting/lying very still.

If the behaviour you are seeing persists, the only thing I can suggest is that something has perhaps got messed up with the way the time is being recorded in the relevant data files, resulting in the Pulse Ox stats not appearing at the time they should in the graph on the watch and in Connect.  Worth considering if the graph would be right if it were shifted backwards or forwards a number of hours.  If that is the case, then maybe a Master Reset of Settings and Data is needed, followed by setting the watch up from scratch again, to get that time glitch cleared.

  • Hm, @Crispin_Ellison it is interesting that you say it should never record during activity considering that it is an optional activity data field. Why give this functionality if it can't be tracked?

As for the the time recording in the data files - I'm finding that it isn't correlating to sleep in either direction. Just looking at the past 7 days, it's usually pretty inconsistent in the time gaps:
