On device sleep and rest heart rate obviously not correct

I really like the new on device sleep function but after some days using it it seems too sensitive to show 'awake' times. Just last night needed a toilet around 2° clock and fall back to sleep very soon - I am pretty sure - but the watch found that I was awake for an hour what I surely wasn't. I have seen the same in nearly all other nights. Never ever I am that often and that long awake.

But - the time when I go to bed and when I get up are really exact. Some one else with similar 'mistakes' or is it just me ?!

Something else I do realize since some weeks ... my rest heart rate (night time) did drop from 60 to around 50. In my age (I am 61) that often does not mean the training did work well - it might be a heart problem - but I do not feel any bad and the times I in running are getting better !  So does anybody else realized a change in the rest heart rate or am I again the only one?

  • I agree on the sleep times, getting up during the night confuses it quite a lot (although it is vastly better than before)

No issues on resting HR for me... it might be a change in how it’s calculated, or it might be a genuine change in your HR. Keep an eye on it over a week or two, that will show which it is

  • I think Garmin's calculation of resting heart rate can lead to over 'optimistic' results that could be alarming to us older folk (I'm 63). While there might be cause for concern, especially if the watch is relatively new, it is the trend over time that is more important. Once settled, RHR should change little unless there is an underlying medical problem. Obviously, if you are concerned get a check-up with a doctor.

As for the sleep monitoring. Just because we think we are sleeping does not mean the watch agrees. Movement and heart rate are both factored in to the estimation. Sometimes my watch will tell me I've gone to sleep quickly after I've turned off the light, other times not. Sometimes my trip to the loo around 2am is detected as short, other times not.

Again, keep an eye on the data. If you think the sleep data really is woefully wrong contact Garmin Support.

  • I’ve noticed the sensitivity in ‘awake’ times as well. Slept great last night 9:30pm-5:30am and it had whole chunks of the night as awake. Definitely wasn’t the case, maybe I just flipped over or readjusted slightly. Since the update, I’ve gone from ~7 hours of sleep a night to 5.5. Definitely not accurate.

Sleep and wake times are dead on though, from what I can tell.

Heart rate for me has not changed at all.

  • Thanks for your input ... so I am not the only one regarding the 'awake' times ... what Garmin hopefully will improve in the future.

Looking on the rest heart rate I feel this happened even before the on device sleep detection was brought in. As well I an sure a have seen a similar posting from someone else (maybe in the Fenix 5 or 6 forum) but I can't find it again. However I will have an eye on it - but I don't think I do have a health problem as I feel fine and still make progress in training values ...
