Metal Detectors

Ok a truly first world problem in many aspects.

I have a Breitling Aviator (all titanium) and am able to go trough airport metal detectors without ever setting them off, they can even run the hand wand over them and never an issue. So when we eventually are allowed to travel again I am curious will the MARQ (specifically the American Magic) set them off?

While I like the blue strap I would likely swap it for a hybrid titanium/silicone one so same question there, are they travel friendly?

  • That’s a good question... I have an Omega x-33 which is all titanium too but out of habit take it off to go through the scanners (makes for less potential discussion with an overzealous agent too)

in theory there shouldn’t be any difference between an all-titanium MARQ and an all-titanium Breitling! Only one way to find out

  • Well I have to admit I was sort of hoping somebody had already tested :)

  • I have tested it many times, MARQ Aviator owner here but it all depends on airpot security screening and how the metal detector is set. Some airports will detect the watch while some wont.

  • I have owned some Fenix Titanium, before Marq.

From my personal experience, as far as airport controle is concerned, there are no fixed rules.

Some needs to take off electronic watch, while some not, depending on the country you're coming or landing from.

Most of the time, it was not needed to take of the watch.

  • I was flying 3-4 times a week before the pandemic. Definitely dependent upon the machine, not even the airport. Sometimes it would go off and some times it wouldn’t. Same with certain boots and shoes (Im TSA Precheck) I just started taking it off so I wouldn’t have to worry about it.

  • My phoenix never sets off an alarm. 50% times (if they see it) I'm asked to remove it per rules so often I take it off in advance and put in the jacket's pocket

  • I've found that a lot of airports ask you to remove things like watches and belts regardless just to make their lives easier and speed up the process, so I tend to just take mine off anyway before I'm asked.  I once bought a belt with a nylon buckle thinking it would put a stop to having to take it off every time, but usually the checker would still ask me to remove it anyway even when I said it wasn't metal.  That said, a few times I did remove it without being asked I was told "you didn't need to remove that as it isn't metal" Rolling eyes

I've got a 15" titanium rod in my leg and there's no consistency as to whether that gets picked up or not - it just depends on the technology.
