Part of running track not shown, distances correctly measured

I have a MARQ series and tried it today for the first time next to my Apple Watch for running a short distance. The distance tracking between Garmin and Apple Watch is comparable (so correct!).

After the synchronization to the Garmin Connect App, I looked at the map and only part of the track I ran is shown (tracking started after approx. 1,6 km). As mentioned: GPS tracking was always on and the total distance shown is also correct. See below. I started my run exactly at the point I stopped. You see the map shows only tracking from the green arrow.

WHat could be the issue?

  • Did you have a good satellite lock before you started?

  • Hi, thank you for answering.
When I started I could see the position was correct, so I assume satellites were locked. Besides this, the total amount of km’s logged was correct. Only the map does not show first 1,6 km (and also performance was not logged first 1,6 km). The rest was monitored correctly. Could it be satellite lock? If yes, it does take quite long to have a lock (I am a slow runner, but 6-8 minutes for a satellite lock seems long to me...)

  • Just an idea. Have you tried to download the fit file directly from the watch and import it to another platform/software such as Runalize, GoldenCheetah, TrainingPeaks? There might have been an issue during the sync, so if you can see the full track after the import, you can re-import it manually to Garmin Connect Web as well.

  • Hi,

Thanks! I will try to do it. By the way: I have seen similar issue at another topic in this forum (I believe with a Forerunner device).
Maybe it is indeed because the satellites were not locked, but GPS/Galileo was working ok...

I will download the file separately. Thanks for the hint.

  • You need to get a satellite lock before you start moving.

If yes, it does take quite long to have a lock (I am a slow runner, but 6-8 minutes for a satellite lock seems long to me...)

This suggests that you might be moving off before you have that as it will always take a longer time to acquire satellites when you are moving.

  • Actually it is within the realm of the possible... a full download of the navigation data package for NAVSTAR GPS takes about 12.5 minutes. Granted, it will be ready before that with basic (unreliable) data, but still 6-8 minutes is not unreasonable (if not what we generally see with GPS receivers).

did you fly or drive between activities (large distance between them)?

  • By the way, looking at the position it shows is not confirmation of a lock but this is not an apple watch so it does actually show lock status (there’s a red / yellow / green bar on top of the activity screen before you press start). You have to wait for it to turn green!
