Pretty Solid OHR performance on MARQ

I usually use the MARQ connected to a chest strap a a performance comparison point for the new 6x Pro Solar. However today i decided to switch it up and do this the other way around since I'd not tested the MARQ OHR in quite some time. The results were quite good.

In this screen shot you can see that the MARQ lags a touch on the accelerations, but otherwise is really close to the chest strap I was using. This run had paces

The surges in this run were as fast as mid 4 min mile and the recovery went anywhere from walking just a touch to typical recovery shuffle.

The MARQ handled all of it well. Pretty pleased with the result and it is clear that Garmin has put some good work into this new sensor as my 5x plus doesn't handle intervals or strides well.

  • I think this can vary person to person.  I've never had accurate OHR with any device that I've used despite trying several devices and straps (fenix 3, 5, 5s, 735xt, marq).  It always reads too high on easy efforts and too low on hard efforts.  At least it does seem to be reliable for overnight HR, but I don't trust it beyond that.  I wish I didn't have to wear a strap every time but I'm used to it now.  My wife's wrist however, works fairly accurately on the 5s.

  • You’re right it does differ from person to person. But even me as one of the bigger skeptics of OHR has to concede that OHR performance is getting better and better. I’m wearing my strap less and less now as a result.

Without a doubt it varies dramatically for different people. The performance above is becoming much more common for me with the new sensors. It surprised me that it worked so well for big accelerations and recovered reasonably well after. If that is the performance we can get out of a OHR these days, I'm also much less likely to take along my chest strap.
