Workout types / planning

Hi All,

Is it possible to create planned workouts for different activity type, for example for Yoga or Calisthenics sessions?

I know there is an 'Other' workout type, however first, it still doesn't fit for Yoga/Calisthenics well and second, if I create 2 different workout plans for them using the 'Other' type and I also want to create goals for these workouts which are based on the type, any 'Other' activity will increase the percent of the other goal too.

Thank you,
Zoltan

  • I think the only workouts you can create and schedule via calendar are things in the list — like running, biking, strength, and then eventually catch-all “custom”. Once scheduled as custom, the workout will be available to whatever activity you choose on the watch (just go to options > training > calendar). Once it’s finished, you can change activity type to Yoga. And it will count appropriately against the goals you have in Connect.

No way to actually create Yoga workout, sadly.

  • Thank you, Nick!

Yes, that's what I am doing, I was just curious if there is a better way I am not aware of.

I noticed another interesting behavior though.

I created a custom workout contains only one repeat block and withing the repeat I added 3 steps instead of the default two.
I saved it successfully and then I wanted to send it to the device. Doing so, my Marq is there but I cannot choose it as it's marked as 'Unsupported device' so I cannot select that workout on my watch from the activity.

However, if I schedule the workout in the calendar, it appears in the calendar widget and I can select it from there and I can do the workout. But still not able to select it from the "My workouts" menu in the activity.

    Weird.

  • Are you trying to send the workout from GCM? You will see 'Unsupported Device' if it's not properly connected so it might pay to check that next time. Perhaps sync first.

If that is not the case it's probably something you need to raise with the GCM team for Android/iOS  in the Apps & Software forum.

  • Yes, I tried to sync the workout from GCM. The workout was created on the web last week, there have been lots of syncs since then. Interestingly, I already tried to delete it, create a new one with only the default two steps in the repeat block, in that case the sync is fine. Recreating the 3-steps repeat block, the problem occurs again. Also tried to create the same workout on GCM, same issue.

    Ok, I will do, thanks.

I have the same problem, not being able to send workouts to the watch from Garmin Connect, when it is an “other” workout. It works for bike. This is most definitely an issue with the mobile app (iOS in my case). It have happened before. Annoying, no doubt, but hoping for a quick fix by Garmin.

I read elsewhere here, that if you add the workout in your calendar as a planned session, it will pop up in your watch on that day. I will try this workaround later. Usually I transfer my various workouts to my watch, and selects the one for the day from the activity menu in the watch. I do not add them to my calendar.

  • Nick, good news, I have just noticed that Garmin rolled out some new functions on Connect Web and among others we can now create yoga/pilates workouts and also all activity types are available in the Goals menu. Cool.

There is also a new Hydration function under the Health Stats, I don't know if it works/synced with any MARQ yet though.

  • Look at Ray’s (dcrainmaker) reviews of the new Venu, that explains all these features... the Yoga stuff goes quite deep (as does a new breathing function)
