Garmin broke my Marq after maps update

Yesterday a morning run in the morning with 2 CIQ apps installed - all went well. Got home and connected my Marq to my computer, I see there is an update for base maps and Europe or so (I do not remember exactly which but it is not important) - I did the update.

Today try to do a run with same app, the watch keep rebooting when starting the app.

I tried the following:

- made Run app back to defaults

- install different CIQ apps, when I try to add the 2nd one, Marq reboots

- set off all my sensors

- reboot my Marq by pressing light button for 10s

No mater what I tried, I cannot add a 2nd CIQ app! The only culprit I could think of was the maps update. I am on FW 3.40 - I am going to write to Garmin beta team. Quite unpleasant!

  • A complete reset might help  ...

  • I want to keep that as a final resort, hope that Garmin will reply to my email with another solution.

  • I realised that another thing I did different between yesterday and today, was that yesterday it was my first ever run where I listen to music through my Marq. So as a conclusion: (a) maps update and (b) listening to music, one of these could be the culprit!

  • Keeping updated the flow of things, this is an excerpt I sent to Garmin team:

"In order to gain some time (presuming that you will reply by asking some more question), this is what I also did in the meantime and it did not solve the issue:

    • update to FW 3.42 beta
    • deleted all my sensors
    • reset to factory the app I was trying to add CIQ apps
    • reset to factory the watch

After I reset the watch I had to pair again with my mobile and redo the set up process. However, after an initial successful sync over the phone, later syncs will keep forever.

In this time I had no sensors linked. AND I successfully managed to add two CIQ apps for a run app. So I thought I solved it! But…

On my watch I had no training status etc (remember the watch could not fully connect over mobile), but after a sync with my desktop computer I got training status and the steps today (before it was 0) etc BUT, the watch again reboots if I try to run an app with 2 CIQ apps or create a new one and add the 2nd CIQ app!!!

So I am back where I started and it starting to get to my nerves as I spent so much time and not managed the issue."

  • Another update: I did again a reset to defaults from the watch but this time did not connect with the mobile. After reset, adding 2 CIQ apps works, but after I performed a sync with my account through Garmin Express, the issue comes back!!!

I do not want to think what happen in the past with Fenix 5 which again had some issues with my Garmin account and after weeks of discussion with Garmin I got a different device.

  •   The fact that the issue came back after installing the two CIQ apps shows us that the issue is being caused by one of those apps.  Could you uninstall both apps and try it again?

If it does not happen again, then you 'could' install one of the apps, test the device, if it doesn't happen with that one, you know it is the other one app and you can let the developer know about the crash. If the one app you do install causes it, then let that Developer know and then try the other app since it could be working fine.

Steps to Uninstall a Connect IQ App from a Device

The issue you are running into with your phone is due to the connection is lost on your device but your phone still remembers the MARQ.  This only happens after a reset of the device, so you will need to remove the device from the phone and then re-pair the device.

How to Add or Remove a Watch to the Garmin Connect App

If you keep running into issues, then please reach out to Garmin's Support Teams so they can work with you directly.

  • I try with several apps: run, trail, bike etc. Also added a new app which I never used before "other" and the same. Tried also to reset those app to their defaults, but still the same. The fact that it worked after a rest of the watch to defaults but got back the same issue after I synced to my account says something although not sure what.

Re the phone connection, I of course deleted the previous Marq from my mobile pairing, and re-added. Now as I write, the connection, after 45min has moved from just a little (that circle that show the level of connection) to a little bit more, like maybe 35% - hopefully over the night it will finalise. But that is a smaller issue. I wrote to [email protected] hoping for a solution

  • Your link to Garmin Support leads to a phone call. Would that be better than sendng an email to

    [email protected]?

The only other thing which I could to is a master reset https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=gCkYwaY3k926atAssdJYm9 but I am reluctant to do it unless I am told it is the assured ultimate solution

  • Garmin Support teams can help you out via Chat, Email or a Phone call.  So since you have tried a lot of things, it would be a good idea to go over things again with them to see if anything is overlooked or if they notice something while talking with you.

The Beta email address is for the Beta Testers and goes to a team that only focuses on the current Beta software since they want to focus on improving the device.  Since your device has this issue on Production (non-Beta) software, then I would suggest working with the Garmin Support team.

  • As I said in my reply above, I updated to beta 3.42 hoping to fix this issue, so, as far as I know if I will call them now they will say I have to go back to the non-beta version but I will try anyway.
