Activity report

Hi everyone,

It's really hot here in the UK but I decided to do a parkrun in the morning, while it was still 17 degrees. The GPS did great this time:

However, my watch took about 10 minutes to boot when I switched it on as I was leaving my flat. There was a message "Maps loading" that wouldn't go away.

I have third party maps of the UK and Ireland but waiting that long for the watch to boot up is unacceptable. I really hope it doesn't happen again.

Anyone else seeing this?

Isn't it just possible that it's a problem with your 3rd party maps?

I have used the same maps on the Fenix 5 Plus and had no issues...

And if you remove the maps? What happens?

Just tried it again- the watch loaded everything pretty quickly. I repeated the exercise to be sure.

I hope the slow boot up experienced yesterday was just a one off.

If you do have a repeat, I did see something similar once after updating the maps on my 5+ and the easy way to narrow down the culprit is to cut and paste maps one by one in to a Temp folder you create in the Primary part of the device file structure. That way is instant and your not losing hours deleting maps and then having to copy afresh from laptop to watch. The fix on my 5+ in that instance was to reinstall the map with Express. Also of note, the slow loading was only rebooting after a forced power off (20 seconds of the light button); a normal power off then on was OK. If the slow loading does happen again, you may need to re-download the third party map again as it may have a corruption that’s causing the issue.

Good to hear. In general a 'problem’ is not a 'problem’ until it repeats itself. ‘One-offs’ do happen even with the best of technology.

You're absolutely right. The one issue that keeps on repeating itself is the rather horrible experience I'm having playing music through the watch.

Garmin was supposedly looking into it but I have lost all hope now..
