Heat acclimation

Lately I have been running several times in temperatures above 22°C/72°F. However, my VO2 max status does not show any correction/does not mention any impact (Marq Athlete). Is this normal? I assume the acclimation is not working as those (high) temperatures must have an impact on training/fitness?

  • I am not sure how it works, but yesterday I did a 2 hours run at 25 degrees and I got a 11% aclimatisation. Based on what Garmin says, I managed to adapt myself only 11%. Wether this is good or bad I have no idea...

  • There's some more info on it over on this thread on the 945 forum https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-945/163010/heat-acclimation  Essentially you need to ensure your MARQ has up to date weather data in the weather widget before you go out for a run, otherwise it doesn't trigger the target temperature.  It worked for me a couple of weeks ago when it was over 22 deg C in UK when I went out for a run, but since then it's obviously decided I've not done an activity in a warm enough environment for a while and it's dropped the heat acclimation info from the Training Status widget.

  • But what is the interpretation of the numbers we get? Should we be happy for higher numbers? Lower ones? Garmin should say more I would say....

  • Simple logic says that the higher the number the better you are acclimatised to the heat, I would say.

  • There’s some other official Garmin stuff over at this support topic (copied text below) https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/marqathlete/EN-GB/GUID-70386BCC-5682-4C5C-9A87-C32AF9B6473B.html  The typical advice I’ve had in the past is that it takes about 2 weeks to fully acclimatise to activity in a hot climate, so I guess one would expect the numbers to increase to somewhere near to 100% after 2 weeks of regular training at 22 deg C or more.

    Environmental factors such as high temperature and altitude impact your training and performance. For example, high altitude training can have a positive impact on your fitness, but you may notice a temporary VO2 max. decline while exposed to high altitudes. Your MARQTm device provides acclimation notifications and corrections to your VO2 max. estimate and training status when the temperature is above 22ºC (72ºF) and when the altitude is above 800 m (2625 ft.). You can keep track of your heat and altitude acclimation in the training status widget.

    NOTE: The heat acclimation feature is available only for GPS activities and requires weather data from your connected smartphone. Full acclimation takes a minimum of 4 training days.
  • You are right, meanwhile after my second run I got a longer message on the watch saying that I am getting better, 33 after 11%, it is like high altitude aclimatisation.
