MARQ Expedition GPS Map Locking/Freezing During Navigation?

I had a very strange, also somewhat serious, issue during a hike yesterday with my MARQ Expedition while in Navigation mode. I hope this is user error and am looking for thoughts as to why this is happening:

I created this course, loaded it up on the watch, then set out.

I left it on the map page and about 2-3 miles in I noticed that somehow the position icon locked onto a single point and stayed put, even though the watch continued to accurately track my position on the trail. The position icon stayed in the middle of the screen while a straight red line indicated where I was on the trail from that point: Here is a photo:

This continued for another mile or so and then suddenly, without me doing anything, the position icon replaced itself back on the trail at my location.

About 5 miles later it happened again and then continued for another three:

Oddly, again, the GPS continued to track where I was on the map, but the position icon just stayed locked into place and told me that I was "on course." (Which I was.)

Then again, just like it started, it caught back up to where I was on the trail and followed me perfectly.

Two miles later, however, while I was still on course, the watch began to tell me that I was 1.2 miles off. I took these photos at the exact same time:

I tried reading the manual to see if this is a feature I'm not aware of that I somehow triggered. None of these really make sense to what was happening in either situation. Any thoughts or ideas as to what I might have been doing wrong? Maybe it's a bug?

Thanks.
