Athlete vs Expedition

Hi, I’ve been trying to compare these and they seem really close. Am I missing anything from below?

Expedition
* Orienteering modes.
* Low power mode (1 track per hour)
* Leather band (includes same band as Athlete?)
* Plus $250 price.
* Bezel

Athlete
* Health metrics on button press
* Bezel
* Triathlete app/widget (couldn’t see it for expedition).

Otherwise, the manuals and functionality seem almost identical?
  • No you are not missing anything. Sounds about right and the rubber band is the same on both. Not sure what you mean by Triathlete app/widget?
  • The Triathlon app is in the list of apps you can add to the MARQ. There is also a multisport event on the MARQ Expedition. You can also do a custom multisport event as well.
  • Apparently, there is a Triathlon activity in the Athlete that isn’t in the Expedition, or at least it isn’t in the manual. The manuals are almost identical otherwise.
  • I just placed a preorder for the titanium bracelet that comes with the Aviator.
    With it, the versatility of when the Expedition can be worn makes it the better buy out of the Athlete vs Expedition.

    Having a silicone, leather and titanium bands that all look great with the watch makes it a really good combo in my opinion.

    Please post pics when it arrives as it's something I was looking at.

    I want to get a Marq but does anyone have any advice on whether to get the Expedition or Athlete?:
    - The front screens are all customizable, BUT you can't program the upper right hand button on the Expedition to take you to the physiological metrics dashboard that the Athlete has - but MY SOLE REMAINING QUESTION IS can you still get the same "physiological metrics dashboard" information on the Expedition easily enough that you access with the upper right button on the Athlete?
    - I would use it 95% for the Athlete functionality but happy to spend $250 extra for the extra functionality of the Expedition (and I think it looks better)
    - The Expedition appears to have all the functionality of the Athlete https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/catalog/product/compareResult.ep?compareProduct=633625&compareProduct=633626

    What am I missing here - what do you think between Expedition and Athlete?
  • Buy which ever you prefer the look/styling of. The leather band with the Expedition can be bought from Garmin separately as an aftermarket item, making the Athlete plus Italian leather band marginally less cost than the Expedition version. Beyond the looks and default watch faces, the only tangible differences I can tell are that the Expedition version has the Expedition App and an orienteering/compass function and the Athlete has the extra physiological metrics view via hotkey; the remaining 99% of functionality is otherwise identical. Hence, buy the one you like the look of. (Even though I'm from an outdoors rather than pure sports background, I personally like the old school chronograph/stopwatch button styling on the Athlete version).
  • Just adding the pics I'd previously posted of my Athlete with the stock 22mm QuickFit brown leather band (that I got a while back to go with my Fenix 5), to give an idea of what the Athlete might look(ish) like with the fancy Italian number that comes with the Expedition.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1479377.jpg

    To confirm, can you get the "extra physiological metrics" on the Expedition not through hotkey but through some button press process?
  • I don’t think you can get the “Extra Physiological Metrics” from Athlete on Expedition, it’s a special feature only made for Athlete, I tried to locate it on my Captain, it’s no where to be found. I hope this help.
