Garmin Instinct stops at 5 floors climbed, must be reset to resume counting

Looks like from suggested threads I am not alone in this issue.

This has happened two mornings in a row now.

Day 1 : Climb up and down stairs until number on watch reaches 5.  Do at least that many MORE stairs - counter doesn't change.  Soak watch in water for an hour, jiggling every few minutes.  No change.  Turn watch off and on again. Counting resumes.

Day 2 : Climb up and down stairs until number on watch reaches 5.  Do two more flights, not counted.  Turn watch off and on again, counting resumes.

What is it with Garmin watches that they can't count stairs without restarting the device?

  • I owned Instinct 1st gen before getting Instinct 2, and did a lot of floors climbing with it. Although it was, especially at the beginning rather tricky, finally I learned how to use it with a satisfactory accuracy. I wrote down some tips to the thread What's the secret to tracking stairs accurately?. Have a look at it, perhaps it can help you too.

Specifically at Instinct, take care that the sensor port, that is very close to the skin at the old model, has free access to the ambient air, and is not submerged into sweat, or covered by skin. Dry it up and then, when running the floors. When running up and down a floor (or two) that is just about 3m high, you may need to slowly rise your hand while still doing steps at the top floor, and slowly bend (while doing steps) and bring the hand with the watch to the floor at the bottom floor, in order to get the watch detecting the 3m altitude difference. When at the top floor, continue walking, till the counter increments the floor count. Sometime it takes considerable time (typically 10-20s, but sometimes it may be a minute). The watch is processing the data, trying to see whether you really climb floors, or rather take a lift, drive a car, and the detection takes some time, especially if you often change the direction. It usually works better, when you can continuously climb a bigger number of floors at a time. Regularity of the pace, and continuing steps are the key for proper processing.

A warm-up is important too, because the temperature change as your body heats up with the effort, causes change of the pressure sensor reading, and can lead to a stalled floors counting.

  • Appreciate your thoughts but it doesn’t match my experience.

mine works perfectly until it stops. And nothing fixes it except restarting the watch.
