  • this is a fascinating website in general. its wild. dna, costal cartilages, psychology, and Garmin watch stuff.

  • Seems that virtually all the feedback Garmin has received on 18.10 from the people who have tried it and posted about it here is that it does NOT fix the problem. Nonetheless, Garmin seems to be turning a blind eye and deaf ear to this feedback. The tone deafness and lack of competence shown here is astounding.

Everyone here has spent hundreds of dollars on one or more of these devices (we have two, including one that we bought new only a couple of months ago). As the saying goes, "The squeaky wheel get the oil."   We will only get somewhere if we are the "squeaky oil." I encourage everyone here who has this problem (and evidently, that is every owner of an Instinct watch!) to start leaving appropriate reviews of Garmin and their products on Amazon, Facebook and other media.

We need to get their attention and get them to realize they can't just paper this over and look the other way. Their inability or unwillingness to timely fix this problem is very disappointing. I think they have way too many different models out and are just not able to support them. They realy should be providing refunds or replacement watches at this point.

The OP clearly tells to report any problems with the beta version to [email protected] The developers do not spend their time on the forum, so the comments posted here are not the expected feedback for them. The question is whether someone reported any problems to them or not.

  • The developers do not spend their time on the forum

You are right. Nevertheless, here in the forum in the corresponding beta threads, the developers have already contacted us and confirmed that a problem is known and a fix is being worked on. Nevertheless, no fix has appeared for months. And there is now no more feedback.

  • They seem to be just trying to ignore this, or try to pretend in their minds that it is fixed when it is not. And I don't think I am the only one to find this response infuriating.

I wrote up a review for this:

"Avoid. It doesn't matter how nice the hardware is if the software is defective. Garmin has been dropping the ball on this. One day you have a working watch. The next day Garmin automatically pushes out defective "updates" that breaks key features. Then they can't or won't fix it.

This is for entire product lines, not an isolated glitch.

I suspect Garmin is pushing out too many models and just lacks the ability to competently support them. Unfortunately without ongoing  software support and web site support from Garmin, your watch is useless. Hundreds of dollars down the drain.

I think this accurately summarizes the situation.

Anyone reading this should feel free to borrow this or write their own. I have this is a Google Doc folder and when Garmin ads show up in FB, it just takes a few seconds for me to take it an paste it in. I've also posted this as a review to various Garmin watches/devices on Amazon.

I realize not everyone has the time or inclination to to this (although seriously, it only takes a few seconds to cut and paste). But if you're unhappy at how Garmin is handling this, you should express your feelings. At this point, I think this is the only way we will see any meaningful progress.

  • Hello,

If it is  not too much trouble, could someone please post details on exactly how to roll back to 14.40, as that seems to be the only reliable fix to the problem at this point?

Here is what I am doing.
    1. I went to this web site and downloaded 14.4: onedrive.live.com/
    2. I opened the 14.4 zip folder.
    3. Some here recommended installing the 14.2 system backdate first and then going to 14.4, so in the zip folder, I opened the subfolder "System_Backdate_1420". Inside is a file "GUPDATE.GCD" - I copied this to my watch at GARMIN > REMOTESW. (That is the folder I copy it to.)

At this point, I restarted the watch, but nothing happened. How do I get it to install????

Thanks for any help with this.

  • Thanks for the link. But there are only the Instinct files. I am looking for the files for the Instinct SOLAR version. The solar version has its own firmware.

  • Thanks for pointing that out. I also have the Solar version and that might be why this didn't work for me. Can anyone post the Solar versions?

(BTW, I was just on the Garmin web site, and I counted something like THIRTY-TWO different watches when I click on "All watches and wearables" and that is not even really a complete list, because the Instinct is not listed. And for many of these, there  are multiple different versions. I think they have too many devices out there and are unable to support them.)

Not sure what exactly you are referring to. Are we speaking about the altimeter, or not? There is a fix in v18.10, and several users reported here in this thread that there is indeed a great improvement in this version. For example, right on the first page:

Altimeter much improved. No more saw-tooth spikes. Ascent/descent measurements believable again.

Hi, great improvement performance about altimeter. In any case, I'm still waiting for an official update release.

    Thanks!

So I am confused why you think they did not fix anything. If you continue having problems, you need to describe your specific issue to the developers, and send them some data. It may be also simply the old know hardware-design problem of the pressure sensor opening being on the wrong place. But there were already plenty of workarounds posted for it here on the forum.
