Hello Instinct customers,

Please read the instructions below to update the software for your Instinct device. We've made some changes to how we deliver beta updates for our customers, so this forum post is now the primary resource for reading the change log notes – they are not available on another webpage. We look forward to your feedback!

18.01 Change Log Notes (changes since 18.00):

  • Improved altimeter performance.

New Software versions listed are in red.

  • System Software18.01
  • BLE/ANT/SNS: 1.60

Instructions for updating software:

  • Download the .zip folder containing the update HERE
  • Connect the watch to your computer.
  • Unzip and copy the included gupdate.gcd file to the Garmin folder on your watch.
  • Disconnect the watch from the computer and it will prompt you to update software.

Please note that you may not get a response to the email unless we need more information on the issue you report.

  • Hi,

There is a wrong algorithm coding to calculate the altitude between GPS altimeter and the barometer during activity.

  • Hi Presi are you running on 18.01? Is this correct elevation in the pic maintained?

  • Alright, I was probably wrong about feet vs meters.

Anyway, out of curiosity, I checked diagnostic mode on my watch (running Solar Firmware v16.00 + SNS v13.00) and it appears that both altitude and pressure are very stable. Altitude varies by on meter and local pressure varies about 10-20 units per second (not sure what they are) per second. This looks perfectly fine and realistic to me.

So, if you are seeing wrong numbers even on the diagnostic screen, this means the sensor hub code is broken and that "smoothing" they applied in v18.01, leading to staircase-like altitude profile in activities, is not really fix and is at the wrong place.

I really hope some engineer could read all these discussions and get a hint what is really wrong.

  • Hi,

Yes, elevation shows correct continously along the activity with 18.01. But sometimes, in other cases/days/ativities, it shows wrong (only few meters). Same case with the elevation plot. I don't understand. 17.5 was a disaster. 18.01 is better but with  altimeter/barometer calculation errors. I don't tried other versions.

Settings on my Instinct Standard (dec.2020):

Settings/Barometer/Calibrate options: DEM or GPS (I tried both). Wirst = Left

Settings/Altimeter/Calibrate options: DEM or GPS (I tried both). Auto-Cal. = ON. Sensor Mode = Auto. Elevation = Meters

    System/Data Recording = Every second

    Activities settings: 3D Speed = ON. 3D Distance = ON. GPS = GPS+Galileo

I'm waiting for an answer by the Garmin Spain support dept.

  • Thanks Garmin. Not so many negative spikes with this version but still far from perfect. I usually get a negative spike in altitude in the night and then it takes many hours for the altimeter to slowly get to the correct value. Once it is almost there, another negative spike comes and so it goes. So I find myself sleeping 1000 m under the sea. I'm also cycling 1000 m under the sea.

Btw, for most activities, once the altimeter goes below 0, it would be a good sign to autocalibrate.

    Please keep working on it.

Saludos
