Altimeter negative spiking after 17.50 upgrade, causing gigantic errors

After the latest 17.50 firmware upgrade, my Instinct seems to gone totally useless in regards to the altimetry.

Until now, it was more or less usable, as a lot of people had reported, it usually record more positive climb that should (maybe between 10% to 20% excess).

But now look at the altimetry record. Those negative continuous spiking caused that about a 890 meters total climb, the device recorded 6600 meters total climb !! That is so insanely wrong.

I have done this route several times, never happened before.

Device was calibrated prior to start, the start altimeter is right at about 1050 meters.

Does anybody know why the barometer has gone this wrong?

  • Hi

I see that version 18.00 is available, but a fix for this problem is not listed in changelog. Can you confirm?

I downvoted your reply as valid answer as it does not contain a solution yet.

    Thank you

  • Moderator forum thread updates do not contain direct answers unless a specific type of question where there is a direct answer or a step-by-step answer that can be provided. When I personally date a post, it means there is a potential software issue being looked into by our engineering team. I will later come back and update my post when a new software update is released that addresses the issue.

I have no information on the new v18.00 Beta software other than what engineering has provided in the update.

  • Surely enough people have complained about the altimeter issues and battery drain issues that Garmin would actually take note of it and at least attempt a fix.

  • You are correct. Our engineers are actively working on a fix for the elevation issue. As soon as the new software is released that will resolve the issue, I will update my initial post above seen at the top of each page just beneath the original report starting this thread.

  • Same issue for me, I did a trail this morning and was supposed to gain 600 meters up. My instinct reports 1200 elevate gain. This is quite annoying. Chris, any clue when this will be solved ? Thank you !

  • I am sorry, we do not have an new software update fix date but I there is solid progress on fixing the cause based on what I can see on the tracking case.

I spoke too soon. Downgrading to 16.50 worked until I connected to Express. Even though I had disabled Auto-Update, it updated back to 17.50. (Shame on you Garmin).

So, now I’ve downgraded to 16.00 and will NOT connect to Express.

Went for a walk today, should have seen about 64ft elevation change. It was 312ft up, 318 down. Better than the 1600 to 2200 ft changes I’d experienced with 17.50, but still wildly erroneous.

Listen: I hope it’s a software bug and can be fixed. If it’s hardware, then it’s game over for this device.

In either case, you have until this Friday to resolve the issue. Past that and I’ll be shopping for a new device. Life’s too short to have to deal with petty frustrations.

  • Hi Mark. Garmin Express ignores your System > Software Update menu. It reads a file on your watch and if on older software, you will always be pushed the new version. Your Software Update menu is related to the software update being pushed by the Garmin Connect Mobile APP when connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth.
