Move IQ effect on stats?

What effect does Move IQ have on the stats?  The manual says it places it on my event timeline, but it's not clear if it modifies the stats due to this type of event.  For example, I had Move IQ turned on for "Bike", but then it detected my hour on a tractor mowing the lawn as a bike ride.  So, did the faulty detection as a bike ride change my stats like "Intensity Minutes", or anything like that?  Or does it just put a marker on my timeline?  I don't want false stats for riding a tractor around!

Conversely, if I record an mtb ride on my Edge 530, and am wearing my Instinct, does it make a difference if I have Move IQ on for mtb?  Will it effect the stats?  (If I bother to wear the Instinct in addition to the Edge 530 I will pair my HRM chest strap to the Instinct as well to get more accurate heart rate data, but that shouldn't change this question's focus.)

So, back to original question, does Move IQ do anything additional to placing a marker on my timeline?

  • Move IQ is a useless function, you can quietly disable it. Besides tagging the detected activity on the daily graph, it makes nothing. Additionally, on some watches (not sure about Instinct), with some firmware versions, with Move IQ enabled. the watch may double Intensity Minutes, despite that it should have absolutely no influence. It is a bug. IMs are purely based on the HR, and the avg Resting HR, and the type of activity (whether manually started, or Move IQ, or none at all) makes no difference (unless the firmware suffers the mentioned bug).

  • , Thanks for another concise explanation.  I was content to leave Move IQ on if it only put an icon on my timeline, but I'll likely disable to avoid any double counting of intensity minutes.  Thanks again!

I'm still wishing Physio TrueUp did more between the Instinct and the Edge 530, but it is what it is.  I did notice that my recent mtb ride with the Edge appeared as a bike icon on my timeline, but still has the big giant gap in heart rate data!  Lol.  Not really much truing up, just an icon...

It is explained in the document: How Does Heart Rate Data Display in Garmin Connect? - see the last paragraph "Why Is There a Gap in My All Day Graph?"

And the list of data, that is being synced through Physio TrueUp, is in the document What is Physio TrueUp?

If you wish they add other data, I recommend suggesting it through the form at Submitting an Idea to Garmin

  • Thanks for the links; they verify what I have come to understand with your help.  Thanks again for helping me to get to up to speed with the new watch.
