16.50 many errors

Hello. Since I have 16.50 in my instinct I have noticed several errors, but I had not been able to go through the forum...now I am almost embarrassed to see the number of reported errors, and that Gamin cannot quickly and 100% solve these failures.
detected errors:
1) completely wrong altimeter. Every morning I got 100 m from the real
2) after a bike ride with my wife (she has a fourrunner), my instinct registered 2 km more in length and 250 m in less altitude
3) battery discharges fast, and even if it is charged, the message "low battery" appears.
It's a shame actually... we didn't buy a cheap product. And the status of the brand is what pushes us towards it.
I see that there are people who mention being able to install a previous firmware 16.00, is it possible? or should we wait for 17?

  • I am sorry you are having issues. Given you have so many new issues, please reach out to Outdoor Product Support for your region.

  • 1) Just a heads up - this problem is considered by genius Garmin engineers "working as designed". It's caused by forced nightly calibration which uses some "random" altitude value and ignores the fact that many people don't live/sleep at the ground level. Support team refused to admit that it's broken feature so it seems that there is no one working on the fix. The only workaround at the moment is to disable bluetooth connection during night, or revoke background location permition from Garmin connect app on the phone.

  • Thank you so much for this information! The future of this watch seems quite pathetic... hundreds of functions, and the basics leave too much to be desired...
Yesterday I installed version 17.00 Public Release Candidate, and the system seems a little better... but not even windows vista was so badly optimized...
I bought it with version 11 or 12, and each update is worse than the previous one. What bothers me the most is that they don't allow free access to previous versions (or I don't know where to find them). If it were up to me I would reinstall 13.00.
Is there a repository for older versions by any chance?

  • This is unfortunate to see! My instinct isn't giving me any issues at all. The barometer is accurate without needing to calibrate it too.

  • All my sympathies to you. As noted by the other replier, the altimeter calibration screw-up is intended behaviour. In general, in my experience, everything with Garmin is 'if it just about works, it is good enough'. It is about marking checkboxes, not about good implementations. The logic behind this is that 95 percent of people do not use most features, so in Garmin-think it's good enough for 95 percent of people. For the amount you pay, that is ludicrous. I've run in to so many smaller and larger bugs, I've lost count. My advice would be to downdate to 16.00 with the beta updater.

  • Hello. Thank you very much. I understand that in the 16.50 zip, the backport is located at 16.00. But it is for Solar. Mine is normal. Will it be okay to install it?

  • As far as I know, all Instinct 1 (non-Solar, Solar, Tactical, Surf) have the same basic firmware. If the firmware doesn't fit, it can't be installed anyway. Just keep in mind that any downdate erases all data on your watch, so be sure to make an update of your favourites, tracks and activities with Basecamp or so, or sync it to the cloud with Connect.

  • As far as I know, all Instinct 1 (non-Solar, Solar, Tactical, Surf) have the same basic firmware.

No, sorry, that's not true. Solar and non-Solar models of Instinct have each different firmware. For example the GCD firmware file of beta v17.00 has 3 027 747 bytes at the non-Solar version, while the Solar firmware v17.00 has 3 197 319 bytes.

However it is true, that the wrong version will be simply ignored by the watch if it does not match the device.

Rather than downgrading, I'd suggest giving the beta v17.00 a try. Besides others, it avoids resetting the device configuration to factory defaults, that happens at the downgrade. It s available in the top pinned thread in this subforum.

  • Ah, thanks, I didn't know that the firmware files were different, as they were always posted at the same time and had the same version numbers. So Garmin seems to compile them for the different Instinct 1 versions at the same time. Sorry for the misinformation.
