Is anyone sticking with their OG/solar instinct?

If so, what reservations do you have about upgrading to the 2?

  • I had the opportunity to return OG solar instinct for credit towards the Instinct 2 but preferred to stick with OG for the below reasons.

My cost was $250 vs $450 therefore the following improvements needed to be worth more than $200 for me

    • Slight screen resolution improvement
    • Marginally better heart rate monitor
    • App Store…I don’t need 13yr olds flashing messages on my watch asking for money just because I downloaded a widget
    • Significant baro/alt sensor port improvement
    • More solar charging…battery life on OG is already great, and I don’t like the redder tint on the 2’s panels

The GPS chipset is the same.

It just didn’t seem like a worthy upgrade for my $200 beans. The OG/OG solar watches are fantastic, and I want to leverage their durability to keep some cash in my wallet until the Instinct 3 comes out in Q1 2024 (my prediction based on release cycle).

  • Definitely sticking with the first version of Solar instinct. The primary reason is the price, for me this type of watch is worth about 200€ (as it can't be serviced and will become just electronic waste in a couple of years), so unless Instinct 2 gets to this price range, I won't even consider buying it. My secondary reason (but pretty much as important as the first one) is lack of competence on Garmin side - obvious hardware or software flaws are marketed as "features/as designed" with no visible intention or commitment to get them fixed, be it the first or second version of Instinct watch. Unfortunately there is next to none alternative in smart rugged watch category with always on display which isn't OLED, but I hope that more will emerge eventually and Garmin will need to try harder.
