Instinct [New User] - Stroke Detection and Bike/Elliptical Distance ???

Dear community,

1 - How can I see my Stroke Type (freestyle etc.) in my app? I use Instinct Standard while swimming. I see all data except the style.

2- How can I see my distance during Gym Bike and Gym Elliptical ? I tried but nothing happened.

3- Do I need an additional sensor/equipment for Gym Bike/Elliptical etc. Do you have suggestions to use the watch for elliptical and cycling?

I like to see your general suggestions related to Instinct. I am a New User Slight smile

Thanks

  • Answering your questions in order:

1 - You will need to view your Connect Mobile APP in landscape mode to see the details of your indoor swim:

2 - You will not be able to on gym equipment 99.99% of the time. They use their own proprietary software and they are not designed around saving activity files when used and then transferring the information to other devices using either the ANT+ or Bluetooth wireless abilities built into your watch. You can add a HRM (Heart Rate Monitor) strap to receive incredibly accurate heart rate within the activity you record while at the gym.

    - Please note, your Instinct watch will not record some higher end data like the Fenix series will when you use a HRM strap. This HRM-Dual will work with your watch. It may also be able to be Bluetooth connected to some gym machines so you can see your HRM on the gym machine. - HRM-Dual.

3 - Ensure you have updated your watch software on your new watch and use the Elliptical activity to start it, stop it, and save it during the activity. When using indoor machines at the gym, since you are not using GPS to capture moving around which provides a wide variety of data during the process, you will not able to capture a great deal. If you invest into your own indoor bike trainers or you use your own bike and equip it with additional speed and power sensors, you will then acquire more useful data you are interested in for Indoor Bike.

  • Dear Chris,

First of all, thank you for your detailed responses. My name is Ozan Kara, by the way. Sorry I did not introduce me in my first message. I am rocket engineer/lecturer and working on propulsion systems for sounding rockets (hybrid propulsion).

    • For your answers, I want to add following questions;

1- Yes, I figured our when I turned my phone screen from vertical to horizontal.

What do you think that the water proof feature of the Instinct, Shall I use Instinct everyday during swimming practices? Should I order vivoactive 3 and switch the watches (to use as secondary watch cheaper option.)

2- Also, there are Records Sections; Although, I completed 1k swimming, records did not activate. I only activated running record. Not walking and swimming.

3- So, I need to have HRM for Indoor Gym. For Elliptical, It does not count the distance. Only time and calories. So, I will follow my data from the machine I use.

Also, during strength mode, Instinct doesn't identify the type of my work (gym machine such as chest press). Instinct only counts the sets. I am entering types manually.

    • I really love Garmin. I want to buy some other types in the future. Can you make a suggestion for me? I looked several types,

    a. vivoactive 3 and forerunner 935 (for cheaper and secondary usage with colored screen)

    b. fenix 6 pro, enduro and quantix 6 (for better performance for future usage)

Do you think shall I buy a Forerunner or vivoactive for Oxygen Sensors? I mean I don't really need does these sensors increase sensitivity of the trainings?

I am mostly swimming, walking and trekking person. Ski 2-3 times in a year.

    • Suggestion;

In Instinct, I can Resume Later (during walking activity) But it would be great to add Another Running Activity While Pausing a Walking. Like Multisport mode.

Thank you again for your responses. Sorry for my detailed comments/questions. Because, I love Garmin and try to share my insights.

  • Also, I am an amateur phographer

I am not sure whether Garmin has tools/equipments for photography or not, I can suggest that you can develop a watch that can connect via Canon DSLR camera. The watch can has trigger mode.

You can collaborate with Miops (I know the manufacturers that I can help you for a future project).

It would be amazing to use Garmin to trigger camera while SpaceX Launches Falcon.

Well, an interesting idea I wanted to share.

    Thanks

  • Answering your questions in the order they were given:

Absolutely. The water rating for your Instinct is 10 ATM. Here is an explanation: Water Rating.

Also, there are Records Sections; Although, I completed 1k swimming, records did not activate. I only activated running record. Not walking and swimming.

It will show your longest swim distance as a personal record. When thinking about going with a Vivoactive 3/4 series, or Forerunner 935/945 series, or a Fenix 6 series generation watch - the PulseOX is intended for elevation training. If you go with a higher end series that has PulseOX, it will also become an option for it taking readings while you sleep in an effort to provide you with more accurate advanced sleep metrics.

If you would like more highly detailed training metrics, then you should consider the Forerunner 935/945 or the Fenix 6 series, Enduro if you do not need mapping but might do an Ultra Marathon, or the Quatix if you own a boat and want to use your watch to control certain features of Garmin Marine devices installed on your boat.

  • Dear Chris,

Thank you again for your responses. I am quite satisfied that I have many options for future usage. It is excited to be part of Garmin community.

I will let you know for my suggestions while using the Garmin watches. Because, personal usage and imagination crease new applications.

    Thanks again,

    Best

  • I checked the compatible devices for the Swimming PRs. Instinct does not allow the PRs. So surprisingly, only Instinct Solar version supports the records.

Is there a chance to update that?

  • Anything is possible for engineering to later add something with a software update but it is worth noting the base Instinct is 3+ years old at this point where the Instinct Solar is a newer generation. There are usually minor differences between generations. A good example of that is the Instinct Solar has a PulseOX sensor now too vs. only the OHR sensor in the base Instinct model.

  • I see. But still the enabling PRs is useful even for older versions. Very simple update.

Very broad point but; People who lives in developing countries can only buy older versions (due to the high tax and currency differences). Therefore, software updates to older versions such as adding Swimming PRs to base mode can make sense.

Yes, I missed the difference between Instinct Solar and Instinct base versions. I wish I could checked it. It would be better to but Solar model. Anyway, still can buy in the future.

    Thanks Slight smile

  • Dear Chris, I have a question. Actually, I regret that I bought Instinct Standard without a detail investigation. I am swimming a lot. Unfortunately it is not tracking HR during the process.

Last 3 days, I am looking for an alternative watch. Can you help me? I am jammed!

Well, I saw Instinct Solar, Forerunner 245, 745, 55 and also Fenix 6 Pro.

Actually I don't want to exceed 500 dollars. I want to sell my standard instinct

What I need is; to see (on the Garmin Connect app)

    • Updated version of HR!!!
    • Sleep Respiration,
    • Vo2Max basics,
    • PulseOx
    • HR all the time,
    • outdoor (hiking, climbing data)
    • Moderate battery life - at least 7-8 days

To be honest, when I search the watches every watch has different deficiency. For example, 55 vs. 245 ( 55 has no PulseOx but has longer battery) therefore, I am jammed.

Forerunner 245 seems the most efficient and cheaper watch. However, I need to think the future. Some updates may not be available on 245.

Also, 745 seems quite nice in design and features. But it is the same price with Fenix 6

Well, do you have suggestions on New HR Sensor and tracking features.

Instinct Solar is the best for me. But lacks in Vo2max. Thus 245 plus Instinct solar can cost around 500 dollars. But, 745 can do the job by itself.

    Really appreciate it.

    Thanks

  • Also, it is quite pitty that Instinct does not track HR during the swimming. So shocked! Garmin is amazing but I think this is a deficiency. Quite easy thing but has no ability!
