Instinct Cycling Cadence

Hi I have an Instinct which I pair with a Garmin Cadence 2 sensor.

And I noticed that there are weird readings on the activity. Those strange triangular sections are captured. I assumed it was the garmin cadence  sensor and swapped to 2 other brands of sensors. And they all create these weird "triangular" anomalies.

I run a Garmin Speed 2, Garmin HR and a Garmin Cadence 2 on my bicycle rides.

  • Just an update. The same thing happens when I use Magene and Xoss cadence sensors. So it feels like this is an issue which happens because of the Instinct.

  • This is more of a problem when visualizing the data, not with the sensor or with the watch. I do see "triangles" occasionally, but they are usually in the mobile app. If you open the same activity in the Connect website, they will not be there. Same if you export the activity and upload it to another sport tracking platform.

What probably happens is: the cadence sensor wakes up and starts counting revolutions, but it takes more time to reconnect with the watch. At the time when it happens, the watch has to record a non-zero value, while, on contrast, when you start pedaling with everything on, there will be zero RPM point, then a gradual increase. In this case, there would still be such a long line, but it would be horizontal and connecting two consecutive zeros. But when there is such a sudden jump in the values, the mobile app does not know how to interpret it and it connects the last known point (which was zero) and the new one (which is much higher) as usual, which causes a triangle to appear.

  • But each triangle lasts for upwards up 30 mins and sometimes up to an hour. Which leaves me even more confused.

  • I went to check it. You're totally right! Thank you for clearing that up. It seems to be during sections of the rides where I was taking breaks. Thanks so much for solving this for me!

  • Yes, precisely. It happens during breaks or during long stops at traffic lights.

If it does bother you, try posting in the Mobile App forum.

  • I should stop taking such long breaks.. Hahaha.. JoyJoyJoy
