Concurrent with the latest Garmin Connect app update to 4.46, my Instinct is having a really hard time connecting to the GPS and subsequently tracking my hikes. Prior to this last update, I had no issues with GPS connecting or activity tracking.

I am sorry your Instinct watch is having GPS issues. Your Instinct watch uses GPS on its own and does not use your smartphone for any GPS functionality.
Please try the following:
- Update and sync your Instinct using Garmin Express on your computer.
- Hard Reset: Hold down your top left power button until your watch shuts off then let go once off
- Factory Master Reset: How to Reset My Garmin Outdoor Watch.
