How to turn off the GPS

I am pretty new to Garmin Instinct, it has been only a few months. I know how to turn on the GPS, you just hold the GPS button, and it shows you your GPS coordinates. I do not know how to turn off the GPS function, however. I press the BACK button, and the normal clock face appears. Is the GPS on when the clock face appears, or do I have to manually turn off the GPS? somehow?

I cannot shut off GPS. It seems to be ON all the time.

If so your battery will drain in about 16 hours

The GPS is only active when you are executing an outdoor activity or when you long press the GPS button to see your current location. All other times the GPS automatically turns off

Thank you. Should I enable the UltraTrac GPS mode to save battery then? How do I do that?

I wouldn't. The tracks recorded in UltraTrac are very low resolution. Unless you are recording over multiple days, I would stick with the default settings or set the every second recording for the highest resolution track recording.
