Instinct temperature sensor broken??

Hi, it' s 3 days that the temperature widget on the instinct show a fixed temperature of 299° celsius...tried to switch on/off, put the instinct in cold water for 30 min, clean all the watch..no way...always 299°!!.the watch is out of warranty...and i think the temp.sensor (dont know where it is) is broken. Someone have the same problem?do you know how to fix it?tnx!Alex

  • Ah, even the altimeter seems broken..it' s fixed on the calibration quote and doesn't change ...bah

  • Mine is showing two dashes since the last update 15.10.

I tried soft reset multiples times in row without success !

  • If the temperature sensor is broken then the altimeter will be incorrect as that is about the only thing the temperature is used for.  There is a diagnostic mode you can run - sorry, don’t remember the button sequence so you will need to google it.  Support will ask you to do a master reset (assuming you have done a soft reset).  After that it is warranty exchange or, if out of warranty, see what deal on a replacement Garmin will give you.

  • Tnx!tried the diagnostic: alt. & baro workink but with wrong datas...next try: wait for a new software update.Last try will be garmin assistance.

Mine broke during a very hot and sweaty running session...

  • For the first time I hard reset the Instinct,  now the temp widget is fixed.

  • Unless the pressure sensor is also broken they will show ok - the bad Data implies the temperature sensor (as it takes the two sensor for altitude).   What did the temperature sensor report?  If it was a software issue it would be all over the forum.  Try a soft reset (hold down top left button until it reboots), then master reset then call support. My opinion.

  • Hi, tried all the types of reset...then sent to Garmin out of warranty, but the replace price was a bit too much...then i had my instinct back with baro/temp already broken (they say software issue). Tried even, following info on this forum, to replace some files in garmin drive...but nothing happenef. It' s not a big problem, since i usually run and bike on flat country and swim on pool and sea. Just one question:  since the baro sensor is broken, when i run, in garmin connect , after the activity, i can see 0 quote, even if i trail in hills . How can i switch off baro/alt and use only gps during activity for the climbing quote?just like in garmin watch that dont have baro...tnx a lot

I am sorry your Instinct has failed sensors. Regarding your question, your Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Barometer settings do not include GPS since your Instinct is an Outdoor watch. However, after you have synced your activity, if you go to your www.garminconnect.com web account, then go to Activities on the far left column. You can go into your activities and use the 'Elevation Correction' option on the far right side of your outdoor activities. You will then have perfect elevation for that activity.

  • hi chris,

thank you for let me know Elevation correction function.

But do I have to turn on this elevation correction every single time?

I'm a very new garmin user(less than a week) and already experiencing barometer error, and after spending few minutes in this forum I've found that the baro/alti meter is quite fragile.(several ppl reported their replacements were also broken)

If the baro/alti sensor is made to be broken, it should be considered as "optional" feature and elevation correction should be the main method

  • Yes. If you need to correct elevation due to it being excessively off, it is a manual process on your Garmin Connect account for each activity.

It is worth mentioning that your altimeter port is open to the environment since an outdoor watch and a proper barometric altimeter so that means chemicals such as chlorine or salt water can be caustic over time and how well you clean and maintain both the altimeter port and temperature port are important.
