Navigation crashes

Hello, I create two tracks on Garmin Connect and transferred them to my Instinct V15.00 Public Release Candidate via Garmin Express. I tried to start the tracks with GPS -> NAVIGATION. While loading watch display goes off. After nearly 4 minutes I can start the Instinct with the CTRL button again (like coming from off-state).

Any suggestions?

Michael

  • I had this too. It happens even more with larger tracks via BaseCamp. It's been reported elsewhere in the Garmin forums. I guess it's an overflow issue where the device tries to parse the track and hits some XML anomaly, starts writing into out-of-bounds memory and then throws an exception. Even Garmin devices twenty years ago had this problem. I very much doubt it will be fixed.

  • Had exact same issue (solar).  Large track ~150mi.  Screen blanks out, but seems that watch is still functional (button haptic feedback).  Had to long press cntr button to reboot.  Created in Basecamp and imported to GC, then sync'd with watch.  Then copied track directly from BC to watch via USB and no blank screen.

  • I have the same issue using version 15.00 on my Instinct. Any track created and uploaded through Garmin Connect Mobile leads to a crash of the display rendering of the watch when starting navigation or viewing the map of the track.

The length of the track is irrelevant, even a track of 1km autogenerated with Garmin Connect Mobile crashes the display for me.

The watch seems to continue to work, though. The display just stops displaying anything and goes blank. I can still navigate the menus and start and stop activities (at least the confirmation beeps and vibration suggest this).

Thanks to D_Estes for pointing out that tracks uploaded as GPX via USB do still work, that's a good work around for now.

  • EDITED: July 28th, 2021.

Since official software version 15.10 has just been released, I will holding off until v15.10 is in full 100% release and then I will be testing this potential course bug/crash issue further.

Thank you to everyone that has posted in this thread thus far to bring this issue to our attention.

I will send a Private Message to you directly if we need anything specific that will help resolve the issue as we look into it.

    Thank you!

  • Thanks for the update.

Updating to 15.10 seems to have fixed the issue for me, at least partially.

Tracks uploaded through Garmin Connect Mobile are now displayed interrupted (at any zoom level) but don't crash the display any more, tracks uploaded as GPX via USB display fine. This seems to be at least related to the original issue.

I've attached a screenshot of a track that should be displayed as a big loop.
