Instinc unreliable behaviour

Hi everybody there....

Today I took my Instinct for a walk in the wood and when I started the "Track me" activity the watch crashed and reset itself but fortunately I was able to start the recording after the crash...

Next during the trail every time I PAUSED the activity and then "RESUME LATER", when resumed the watch crashed again...

And this behaviour went on and on every time I PAUSED and next RESUMED the activity...

This is the first time I experience such a problem and I really do not know what to think...

I was in a condition where if I was not able to track my trail I would have been a very hard time to get back to the car....

Not an awesome condition to got lost in the wood...

The FW is the last one, 14.30...

The watch was recarged before been used...

The EXPLORE app was NOT able to display anything but the last position...

No track and anything else...

Thanks for every one stepping in to help....

Ciao

  • Did you have enough free space for the watch to record the track or any eventual temporary files?

  • Thanks for the fast replay...

I will give a try to the reset procedure...

The free space on the watch is about 3.5MB over 8MB of total memory space...

I think it is enough for everything the watch can do during an activity record session....

If not, well since the internal memory is so limited there should be a design fault...

But I don't think this is the case...

That's all for the moment, since I will have another outdoor session maybe on wednesday and I will try again if this fault is still there even after a good reset...

  • As it sounds like this was a one off, before trying anything other than one of the partial resets or just a reboot (not the full reset that requires everything to be set up again), I would just test with a new activity (just near your home for example).  There may have been some corruption in the original activity file causing the crash where a pause and resume later just kept hitting the same issue.

  • Well, I've already gone the reset way...

But, anyway I'll test it asap to see if the isse is still there...

Moreover, is there a EXPLORE user guide somewhere? I was not able to find one on the NET...

  • It's time for an update, as promised...

I tested the Instinct RESUME and RESUME LATER mode and...

The RESUME LATER always worked well and I had a good experience...

The RESUME crashed the watch again 1 time out of 6...

I don't know why but this is how she goes...

Now for the "ODDS and ENDS"...

The Garmin Connect app running on my phone always tell me that the watch is CONNECTED, and I trust it as I use it every day for my workout...

The Garmin Explore app is...USLESS, to be kind...

The watch showed as  DISCONNECTED and the only way to refresh the status was to cycle the power of the phone!!

When the phone was ready again the Explore found the Instinct and a nice track appeared on the screen...

But after a while it was impossible to read the screen again...

Suddenly a bunch of lines showed up from every point of the previous recorder tracks and...

Anyway, I will try to load the screenshot I took just for fun...

The Garmin Explore app is the worst GPS app I've ever used...

I really think that I can do better even without the Garmin knowledge...

    That's crazy...

Unfortunately the Explore should have been the "EXPANSION" of the Instinct capability to show the track on a readable color map giving the watch even more power, but things are not as supposed to be...

    And that's it for now.

    Enjoy your Instinct...

  • Please note that you can see the track on a readable color map (or satellite image, for that matter) using Connect. I believe that Connect does perfectly fulfill that function you mentioned: to be "the "EXPANSION" of the Instinct capability". Connect is a very powerful application (both on mobile and web). Explore, as you said, is best forgotten.

  • Can you see the track on Connect DURING the activity? I know that you can see the track AFTER the activity has been saved and NOT during the activity recording...

    Am I missing something?

  • Not AFAIK. Only after finishing the activity does the Instinct upload the activity file to Connect.

  • So for my use is useless... I need to see where I am DURING the activity to find the way to get back to the car or to explore the surrounding, not when I'm at home...That's why the EXPLORE app could be usefull, if only it works as supposed to work...
