Let me add that while Total time is the name used in GC/GCM, in the watches as a datafield it is typically called Timer .
Support Center article - Instinct Data Fields
For the click-averse among us:
Avg. Overall Speed
The average speed for the current activity, including both moving and stopped speeds.
Avg. Speed
The average speed for the current activity.
Based on that I would assume 'Avg. Speed' only includes moving speed. But then what's the difference between 'Avg. Speed' and 'Avg. Moving Speed'?
Edit: This is incorrect. See comments below.
I know right...I'm going to be on a 100 mile hike that you need to complete in 50 hours so I'm trying to get my "Overall Speed" and current speed on my instinct so I can see how fast I'm going at any point and see how fast I'm traveling including breaks/stops over the course of the entire hike. Thanks....
Just looking at some of my activities on Garmin Connect, there's Avg. Speed and Avg. Moving Speed. Avg. Speed includes stopped and moving time (ie Avg. Speed = total distance/total time). Avg. Moving Speed only considers time when you're moving (ie Avg. Moving Speed = total distance/moving time).
So my comment above "I would assume Avg. Speed only includes moving speed" is incorrect.
Someone else will have to chime in on what Avg. Overall Speed is. Perhaps it has something to do with activities with multiple laps or something.
But for your purpose, Avg. Speed will get you what you want. You want your Avg. Speed greater than 2.0 mi/hr.
Without checking any activities (Note I have not used hike app for a long while, just walk app on my Fenixes, and walk app misses moving/stopped logics) I would define the formulae of these data fields differently from yours.
1)
"Avg. Moving Speed
The average speed when moving for the current activity."
Moving distance/Moving time
(NB: that is not the total distance, but only those meters which were covered when the speed was above the threshold, so when moving.
I wrote it assuming that the defintion by Garmin is correct. It might be it is not and the real calculation is different, and also in this case the normal Total distance is used in the nominator)
2)
"Avg. Overall Speed
The average speed for the current activity, including both moving and stopped speeds."
Total distance/Elapsed time
(NB: Elapsed time includes not just the stopped time, but the paused time, too. So the definition of Avg. Overall Speed is not the best one, because Avg. Speed by definition includes both moving and stopped speeds. But the latter does not include paused time.
Its definition should be written as "The average speed for the current activity, including both moving, stopped and paused speeds"
3)
"Avg. Speed
The average speed for the current activity."
Total distance/Total time
(NB: its definition should be written as "The average speed for the current activity, including both moving and stopped speeds")
Anyway the best definition in manuals and support articles would not be those descriptive sentences, but the formulae themselves!
Let me add that while Total time is the name used in GC/GCM, in the watches as a datafield it is typically called Timer .
