My understanding is that you'd know if your phone was not connected - Connect wouldn't be syncing and there would be various messages on widgets that needed data from a connection.
In my experience this kind of thing is an apparently random error (= minor bug that no one is admitting to) but things like checking your phone's battery saver or do not disturb settings and trying switching them one way and then the other.
