Washing With Soup

Good day, want to ask if is it safe for the sensors to wash the watch with soup and water everyday, as you know we are in pandemic situation right now and I don't know if it is ok for the sensors like barometer, altimeter and thermometer sensors to be exposed to soup and water daily. And if exposed to soup and water daily what possible thing could happen to the sensors? Would be basically stop functioning after a sudden?

  • I guess it depends on what flavor soup you use.  I would avoid anything thick or chunky like split pea or cream of mushroom, etc.  A nice clear  broth or consomme would probably be OK, but honestly, I'd just stick to warm water and a mild soap like Dawn, or similar, which does not leave a residue.

  • I think you mean soap, not soup ;)

In any case I wouldn't wash my Instinct on a regular basis, let alone daily, out of concern that water or soap residue could enter the barometer opening and cause problems. I also don't see why this would be necessary under current pandemic conditions any more than the daily washing of everything else you come in contact with like clothing, jewelry, eyeglasses, furniture, etc.

  • Haha, yes I mean soap, sorry I was typing fast and didn't check it says soup, ok thank you for the advice, problem right now as we were our watches everyday and every wear we are not sure if droplet of other person's you come in contact with or talk to was accidentally get on your watch face or no, that's the reason I was asking what's the best way to sanitize our watches this pandemic, is it ok to clean the watch with alcohol? To be honest I got another instinct that after 3-4 days of use the sensors wear not working at all and considering this watches are rugged watches built to military standard as it is claimed by Garmin so I was wondering what happened to my watch, till now Garmin didn't give me a clear answer on it if it was due to hardware issue or software issue but the sensors was totally not working at all after 3-4 days of use direct from the box of delivery, I mean brand new and 3-4 days no sensors were reading at all, in this 3-4 days the only thing I did was to wash the watch everyday I got home with normal hand soap and fresh water and then dry it immediately, that's all , so I am really confused and was not expecting this from a military810 rugged watch as it's claimed by Garmin

  • I shower with my Instinct every day (even several times) and I always take the watch off my hand and wash it with regular soap (during the shower). I do this for ~1.5 years and no bigger issues with sensors. My water causes a lot of mineral residue though - I can see that barometer slit is quite cluttered, but still works relatively accurately tho Slight smile

I think that the soaps won't affect it much - perhaps might clutter the whole in barometer. The biggest risk is a sun spray or cream - they dissolve plastics and I'm pretty sure it would affect Instinct Jack o lantern

  • Here is our "Wear and Care" FAQ article. Definitely do not use anything more than tap water and vigorously shake your watch to drain the altimeter and thermometer holes as much as possible.
