Anyone know how to record a vertical gym climber as an activity? Or something similar at least?

I own a vertical climber gym machine thingy. I've tried to record it using other activities (just so I can get some data to give me a goal to beat) but I'm not having any luck. I've tried climbing, elliptical, floor Climbing, stair stepper, even walking! Etc. Everything just stays blank as though I'm not making any progress (apart from HR obvs). Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

What exactly are you looking for to be recorded? If you expect that it counts your steps, or cadence, you may need to attach the watch to your ankle, since I suppose that you hold the handles of the climber, and hence the watch may have difficulties to detect any steps. Especially if the handles are static ones, but even if they move, but their motion is too slow or too smooth, the accelerometer may not evaluate it as steps.

  • That's something I hadn't thought about. Great idea, thank you. Ideally it would be nice if I could find out the distance climbed, but I don't think the altimeter will allow that to happen with virtual climbsShrug

If you use the Treadmill Activity, there is an option for calibrating the profile, in the Stop/Save menu. It then estimates the distance from the number of steps. It assumes you manage to get the watch recording your steps correctly, of course.

I do not know whether there is similar option in the Virtual Climb Activity profile (but did not hear about it). However, you can record the activity as Treadmill, and then changing the type to Virtual Climb later, in Garmin Connect.

  • Okay, I'll give the treadmill thing a go Fingers crossed. Unfortunately I can't find a virtual climbing option to change it to. The closest I can see is indoor climbing - annoyingly that is an activity I already do (lockdown dependent) so it might make my data look a little odd Sweat smile Thanks again for your help and time. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Would be nice if Garmin could add something like this in the future at some point Thinking

Why not using Stair Stepper, or Floor Climbing?

  • Neither the "floor climbing" nor the "stair stepper" activities seem to record steps...

The "cardio" activity might be the best option for now, as it counts steps (as long as your movements on the vertical climber aren't too short/long/fast/slow). Moreover, the heart rate sampling rate is higher, which is important if you aren't using a separate heart rate monitor.
