I got an Instinct about two weeks ago and have been using it daily on a treadmill. I understand that when using a treadmill the Instinct must calculate distance based on something like arm swings, steps and/or stride length.
When I use the treadmill at a steady pace the readings are seemingly random. For instance when the treadmill runs at 6km/hr the watch may show 0.5km after the first 10 minutes, then it can take as long as 30 minutes to get to 1km, then 10 minutes to register 2km, etc. At the end of the activity the total distance, fastest pace, etc. readings make no sense.
I've calibrated the distance after every activity on the treadmill hoping its algorithm will converge to a correct value. But after two weeks there's really no improvement. For instance I just completed a 45min walk at 6km/hr. That should result in a distance of 4.5km. But the watch showed barely more than 3km. I don't hold on to the treadmill. My arms swing naturally as when walking or hiking so the Instinct should be able to pick up my movement.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to calibrate the Instinct so that the distance and pace readings are correct. Or do I have a defective unit?
Thanks.
