Garmin Instinct - Swim Question

Hi,

I love my Garmin Instinct, but I noticed in the water it is not accurate. I swim laps in a 50 meter pool and it's just flat wrong by 2 or 3x. I would rather have some kind of counter widget where I just click my watch every lap to keep track. Is there any way to do this? I don't see any option but wanted to check.

  • The laps are detected by the accelerometer, so make sure your turns are enegetic enough to be detected, and oppositely that you swim fluidly and continuously without smashing the hand with the watch too strongly onto the surface. It works relatively well for me, though it could be certainly better. But my swimming style is not perfect, and I often swim in a crowded lane, where it is sometimes hard to keep a regular pace.

Is there any way to do this?

If your swimming style is not compatible with the automated lap detection, you can use the Open Water Swim profile. Disable GPS in the settings of the OWS activity profile (to avoid drining the battery quickly), and enable the lap button (or set a hot-key combination for the Lap function). You can then mark the laps manually.
