only the last day of my 4 day hike has been synced when back in town. I see all the steps etc have been recorded. Is there a storage limit that could have done this? Is my hike data lost?

The storage of Instinct is indeed rather limited, so it is possible, especially if you did not free any space before starting. How many files do you have for example in the folder //GARMIN/Activity/? And how much of free space does the drive show now?
