instinct 11.0 GPS location is really Slow

Hi,

Went I bought the instinct for the first time the GPS location was really fast (few seconds, maybe 3 ou 5)

since that time and despite the Software upgrade the GPS location is really slow (between 3 and 5 minutes, never less)

Could you let me know want can I do to get the GPS location to the previous acquisition time ?

thanks a lot

  • My instinct started acting up with the GPS lock and then failed to record my complete 10k run. I solved these problems by resetting and deleting all data on the watch through its settings menu. It was the first time after almost two years of ownership that it was necessary to do so

  • Enabling the option GPS+Galileo in the settings of the concened activity profile (each Activity has its own setting!), can help also to get the GPS lock quicker.

Also, when you start your activity, disable the WiFi on your phone first, and make sure mobile data is functional. The watch attempts to download the fresh EPO file when you start the activity. When the phone is still in the reach of your home WiFi router, it starts to download the file, but when then the connection drops, it takes a moment before the phone switches to mobile data, and the EPO file can stay expired, corrupted, or empty, causing then the slow GPS acquisition.

  • Hi All,

thanks a lot for your help.

I Try few things without any changes:

    - resetting all the activitys on the instinct

    - software Update to 12.x

I do not understand why the GPS was real fast at the early beginning and need know 3 to 5 minutes to synchronise. By default GPS only is activated on the Watch and I never take my phone with me while running. Why do I need to activate Galileo to get previous normal use  now ?

Did you read also the second paragraph in my previous post? It might give you the clue.

  • Hi Trux,

Yess I read all your answer sorry Slight smile

With or Without Galileo : no changes, GPS lock is still slow.

Best of all today the "GSP" steal 4 kilometers ( know as done but can't be seen in the GPS map picture).

I never use my phone will running, just the watch to answer your last question Slight smile

Hope i'm going to find a solution, it's so frustrating waiting for the watch to be ready for sports!

  • So, the next time you go out, connect the watch to the computer with Garmin Express, and click the symbol for update check - it will refresh the EPO file.

Also make sure that you wait till you get the checksign in the round GPS field, before runing. Better yet, wait a minute or two more, after getting the GPS lock. And stay away from buildings and trees, make sure you have a clear view on as much sky as possible.

  • Hi Trux,

thanks a lot - You find the solution

I connect my watch to Garming and that's perfect!

My watch done the GPS lock in few seconds :)  So I need to do this regularly to avoid low GPS lock Slight smile

  • So I need to do this regularly to avoid low GPS lock

Normally, if you have a phone with mobile data at you, and a functional BT connection of the GCM app to your watch, you do not really need, since it happens automatically. The problem is when the EPO update begins (usually when you hit the GPS button to open the Activity menu), and you are still conected to your home WiFi. As you then move away, and lose the WiFi connection, not yet been connected to the mobile data, the EPO update is interrupted, leaving you without a functional file.

The solution that usually helps, is disabling the WiFi on your phone, before you hit the GPS button on your watch.
