I am always running down hill!

All my runs are home to home circuits but my elevation consistently shows an overall drop in elevation -- example attached.

Apologies, the graph isn't very clear but it typically starts at around 180m and ends up at around 130-140m. Runs are usually 3-6km.

For reference, my home is at 170m so it starts off too high and ends up too low.

  • Typically my runs start and end at the same place and I would see similar results that you have shown for most runs.  Set to Altimeter mode and no calibrations during activities.  Disappointing.  I have moved on to a Fenix 6 with much better results.

  • Yes I also have the same kind of issue as shown below for a flat run, starting and ending at the same place. There is a slight increase of elevation during the first ~10mins and then a big decrease with a final difference of ~50m like you.

After some experiments to understand what is happening, I saw that when displaying during the activity the raw pressure from the barometer, elevation changes are consistent with pressure changes. And if you take off your Instinct and attach it to a bag you will have better results.

So in my opinion this is due to barometer sensitivity to moisture and that is why no elevation calibration setting can make any difference. Now I put for 5s my Instinct under water, 10 mins before starting an activity so that it is already wet, and results have improved a lot.

The barometer of the Instinct always had issues and the strange thing is that at the beginning it was not the same kind of issues. The current behavior started about a year ago, before that my main complaint was a too smoothed elevation graph...
