Garmin Tempe disconnecting

I was on a hike this weekend, with the Instinct on my wrist and the Tempe strapped on my backpack (first use).

The real temperatures were almost never above freezing, however the graph shows some huge spikes, which I suppose is the sensor disconnecting.

Also, although not visible on the graph, the stats say the max temp was 19C, which I suppose is the temperature around my wrist.

1. I found some 3yr old threads and I wonder why the problem is not fixed yet.

2. Does anyone know what Avg Temp refers to? It’s the arithmetic Average, which will take into account all the anomalies (rendering it useless), or it’s the arithmetic Median which will filter them?

Thanks,

  • Garmin support document Why Does My Tempe Keep Disconnecting From My Watch? tells about the disconnection the following:

At the start of an activity or when you view the temperature widget, your watch will look for a previously paired tempe sensor and will connect the tempe if it is in range and powered on. Once you have concluded your activity or left the temperature widget page for more then 30 seconds, it will disconnect again to conserve battery.

It means, if you want the temperature logged permanently, you must never leave the Temperature widget on the watch for longer than 30s (and you have to count with a higher battery draw at the Tempe sensor).

An alternative way is desribed in the document Pairing the tempe Sensor with an Adventure Watch:

In order to view data recorded via tempe, a data field will need to be set to display temperature or the temperature widget will need to be enabled. For assistance adjusting data fields, see the owner's manual for your watch.

Does anyone know what Avg Temp refers to? It’s the arithmetic Average, which will take into account all the anomalies (rendering it useless), or it’s the arithmetic Median which will filter them?

Have a look at the graph, it answers your question rather clearly, I believe (option 1).

  • I forgot to say:

I was into an activity the whole time (10h), and I almost never fiddled with the watch. So the part that says “Once you have concluded your activity..” should apply.

  • Isn't the auto-stop option enabled in that Activity profile? That could disconnect the sensor when you stop moving, move with a very slow pace, or even when the GPS signal drops. The question is how quick and how well the sensor then reconects when auto-resumng the activity. I'd suggest disabling the option, if it is on.
