Resting HR data - can it recorded in higher resolution?

As some others have posted, when reviewing my resting heart rate history, the data is recorded in 2 minute intervals. I know that during certain brief activities that my HR spikes and although the HR display shows this in real time, when the data is uploaded to Garmin Connect, the data is all averaged together (similar to what the weekly HR history shows on the watch). This is not particularly helpful if I'm trying document issues or abnormal HR activity.

Is it possible to modify the recorded HR resolution during periods of rest (sleeping and/or not working out) to intervals of 1, 30 or 60 seconds without having to wear the chest strap all the time?

Garmin's online documentation states that this is not be regarded as a medical device and does have limitations...but if more detailed HR data can be recorded during activities, why can't users have the option to enable this during non-activity periods as well?

If its not possible now, can that be considered a future firmware upgrade as a selectable option?

  • Have you thought of setting up your own activity that would not use GPS and running that whenever you want to record more detailed HR data?  You could set up data fields that could show you just about everything available on your watch face.

Good suggestion. I guess that would be a workaround. Unfortunately, I'm not that good with customizing the GUI yet to emulate the standard watch face.

I've heard this 2 min interval claim also, but I can't find any documentation on it.  This is what the manual states which makes no mention of intervals.

RHR: This value is for the current day. It is calculated one of two ways. For users that wear their watch while sleeping, the watch will read and record the average of all readings while they sleep, excluding periods where any steps were detected or the measured heart rate falls outside reasonable bounds. A minimum of four hours of sleep time is required to register a reading. For users that do not wear their watch overnight, RHR will be far less accurate and a rough estimate will be determined based on the lowest average reading over a one minute time period during the day.

I should clarify...the resting HR data is timestamped every 2 minutes...whether that is an average over that time period or the HR taken at the start/end of that block of time, I don't know. I do know that over a period of time, I spiked my HR and then uploaded the data to Connect and in reviewing the HR data...all data is timestamped in 2 minute increments and my spiked HR data was nowhere to be seen.

What I'm disappointed in is that the watch is actively collecting HR data during normal operations but then loses that granularity when trying to review it later. It would nice if it could retain that for at least 24 hours giving the user enough time to upload the data to Connect before it rolls over to the next 24 hours...or something to that effect.

You do not need to emulate anything. You just start an indoor activity such as for example Cardio or Yoga, and that's all. No need to emulate or customize anything. If you want the standard watch face during the time the activity is recording your HR, just press the BACK button. Press it again if you want to see the activity screen, or when you want to stop the activity.
