Barometer and 83886 issue. Brand new watch, tried everything. Roll back to prev firmware?

Hi guys,

Just got today an Instinct Solar and after updating it to the lastest non-beta firmware the barometer went nuts with the "83886" problem (I think i saw it working prior to the update, but im not sure).

GPS works fine but altitude and barometer are blank, and when trying manual input of values i get the "Sync Failed" message. Im asking here and not in the Solar forums cause ive seen that this happens with all instinct models...so...

- Im about to go to the store to get a replacement. Already tried everything (resets, hard resets, factory settings, good spot to get gps signal, etc)

- Would be an option to roll back to ANY working firmware, in case this is a SW issue? Im trying to find info/files on how to do this but nothing. Anyone know how to do it? Is it safe?

Believe it or not, Garmin posted a solution to the 83886 problem which worked for me!

I might be wrong, but I'm unaware of anyone finding a fix when this happens. It's a faulty sensor and SW isn't going to fix it. I'd exchange it right away.

It is a rather common problem at certain devices, possibly caused by a failed or an incomplete update, but the only reported resolution until now, was a replacment of the device. See more details in the following post:

I let the device alone without touching it for 10min during the update: I do not know why it should have failed.

I feel lucky that this happened under the 1 year warranty, but it is already the second time.
If Garmin has to replace it again, it will be my 3rd device.
I am very concerned that this could happen again when out of warranty, then what happens to my device?
What long-term reliability do Garmin devices have?

Just wrote to Garmin support, let's see what their reply will be.

They should focus on it. Another one had just been reported. Although it is under warranty, but it do bother me. It should be a tough guy, but weak in SW :(

I have also the 3rd Instinct, due to another (software) problem, until I found how to reset it. For reason unknown, authorized service center did not know this trick, and everytime I got the new one. (The last one with a completely discharged battery, so I am afraid its health is questionable, so the change is not the win everytime).

So, I would like to know if the "Master reset" affect your problem, see this:

I performed the reset you suggested, but I still have the 83886 problem.
I think this "Master reset" is the same of the factory reset with Delete Data that you can find in the settings menu (at least the way the watch responds to it is the same for me).

In the test menu (accessible by powering Off the watch, keeping pressed the Down button, and shortly pressing the light button to turn on while keeping the down button pressed), page 8 (pressing 8 times the Back button) I have Baro Test: Invalid.
This probably means that the barometer sensor is not communicating with the watch.

The US customer service could not help me because I have a Japanese model.
Will need to find a way to talk to the Japanese customer service (hopefully in English).

You are maybe right. In my case the menu was not available, so only the Master reset helped and then I thought it is mightier than it really is.

Yes, this is a good proof.
