Bike Activity Shows Max Speed As 207 MPH.

The wife and I went for a leisurely cycle ride today. I used the Bike activity just to record the distance we covered. I was surprised to see that although our average speed was 8.5mph, our maximum speed was shown as 207mph. I'm reasonably confident that our speed never exceeded 200mph because the blackberrys we picked ftom the hedgerows were still resting on a tissue in her bike basket when we arrived home.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? The only thing I did differently from before (apart from the 10.10 update) was to use auto pause.

  • Probably you started before the GPS satellites were fully locked, hence having wrong starting postion, far away. If you share the link to the activity, we could perhaps tell you better.

  • Hi Trux. Thanks for stepping up; your advice is much respected on this forum.

On the day in question, when we stepped out of the back door the sun was shining and the wife decided to hang some washing out before we left. I sat in the garden wirh the GPS window ticked, giving it a good old soak for about ten minutes. I'm fairly confident that my Instinct knew where it was. I don't know how to share the link but I have a couple of screenshots to show you. The new map options show my speed as low apart from this one very short section at the end of my road where it seems the watch lost the plot.

On the plus side, I cycled a similar route today and everything was tickety- boo so hopefully the 200mph thing was an anomaly.

  • Yes, it looks like the watch either acquired an additional satellite at the end of the red section (or lost a connection to one), and as a consequence it adjusted the position couple of meters. However, including such GPG repositioning to the speed calculation is a clear algorithmical glitch, so I would recommend contacting the Support and also the development team at [email protected], and reporting the glitch to them.

Include the screenshots, and also the link to he activity - they will need it. You can get it by tapping the Share symbol on the Activity page, selecting the option Web Link, and sending it to yourself. Or easier - open the Activity in Garmin Connect Web, and copy the address line from the top of the browser.

  • You do realise you may have accidentally discovered that you have superpowers? But please remember: With great power comes great responsibility.

  • Crikey! I hadn't thought of that. I only got the Instinct in June, so this could have been happening for years without me realising. Or maybe it is the watch which has imparted these powers! That's got to be it! I don't recall reading anything about it in the manual, but then let's face it the manual was pretty lacking. Still the ability to cycle at over 200mph for a mere £240 (£30 off in the spring sale) is a definite result.

  • It happened to a friend of mine. These days, we hardly see him anymore, because he's constantly 'saving the world'.

Anyway, at the beginning, it merely appeared that the altimeter on his Garmin was going haywire. Little did we know...
