Course Navigation Issues

Instinct Solar, Software 10.00, GPS 4.50

I've been using this watch for almost 2 months now with very few issues (1 reboot during a hike), but I tried navigating a course while on a hike for the first time and experienced the following issues:

  • The course I loaded started at a trailhead and I had to park ~.25 miles from the trailhead but started the activity where I parked.  My watch displayed elapsed time but no distance until I got to the trailhead.  Is this intended?  Looking at the track on my phone afterward it just recorded a straight line between where I parked and the trailhead.
  • A few minutes after the course started the watch rebooted and was stuck on the Garmin screen momentarily.
  • Once I reached the summit of my hike I decided to try the Back To Start function.  On the way back the watch was giving me Off Course / On Course notifications every few minutes even though I followed the exact same route back.  (It was a narrow trail so it was hard to get off course by more than a couple feet)
  • On the way back the watch rebooted ~5 times.

Has anyone else seen these issues with Navigation?  Is there a way to download crash logs for the reboots?

  • 1. Regarding first point - looks like you had issues with aquiring GPS - did you start activity or waited for the fix? If you were going through the woods with bad weather those things happen unfortunately Disappointed

    2. The reboot happens sometimes - the Garmin screen is just the watch booting up - it always takes some time ;) I managed to crash my Instinct repeatedly - you just need to navigate a course, then save a point with custom name. Opening map screen will reboot the watch :D it's a pretty complex piece of software with loads of features so Garmin sacrificed stability a bit (though I have to admin I had loads of crashes but watch always recovers fine without losing any data - well, I lost data only once, but this was very peculiar issue).

    3. Looks like GPS issues for me - when Instinct loses signal it might complain about being off-course

    4. Yikes, my only rebooted 3 times during 4 hour run this summer. Maybe there is some race condition that triiggers with poor GPS reception?

EDIT: I use Navigation (courses) a lot and using one during activity longer than one hour usually means I'll experience a reboot. As for reboot logs - you might try to check in Garmin Connect app. You need to go to Settings > (at the very bottom in Android) Diagnostic. Perhaps there is something there Slight smile

  • I had the navigation reboot problem prior to the 10.00 release.  Seems to be fixed now.  This is not the Solar forum, so there may be other issues with the Solar that aren't apparent in the pedestrian version of the Instinct.

  • I also had a lot of restarting of the watch when hiking before the 10.00 version.

Since then, it has been resolved but I still have a very annoying problem: when I deviate from the route, Instinct signals me "off route" (normal ), but when I find the route and start following it again, the watch does not find the route, it continues to consider that it is still "out of route".

So I no longer have the distance and the total time remaining, and no longer the estimated time of arrival.

It's very annoying on a big hike. I have to stop the activity, choose "resume later", and when the activity resumes, the watch resumes on the course. This is the only way I have found to make it work properly.
