Activity data corrupted when navigating using course

Hi,

Today I went for a 3 hour run. I uploaded GPX from Locus map into my Garmin using Garmin Express, chose my training (3 intervals 55 minutes each) and started navigation. Everything went smoothly until I saw what Garmin uploaded to my phone. Only last hour of activity is described in intervals and visible on the map! Total activity time, heart rate - all data only for the last interval. I've checked the activity on the watch and same thing. Please, is there any way to fix this activity? File is suspisiously small so I guess the data is missing. I'm completely heartbroken :[ attached is the .fit file from my Instinct. I'm using firmware 7.20 on Instinct Tactical

  • I'm using latest stable firmware and Instinct Tactical btw. I converted fit file to csv using http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ - and data inside is mostly garbage. I cannot word how disappointed I am. Maybe there is a way to fix it? regain at least some data? Might it be corrupted storage on my watch???

  • So I analyzed the file with demo of Fit File repair tool. Apparently GPS data has not been collected for first two hours, yet heart rate data is still there.

    EDIT: removed useless rambling.

    hi,

had a look at your training fit file

for the first two hours there is NO activity data recorded

    • only data logged during the two hours are the hr target warnings low 154 and high 163 and some others

    happy & safe sporting

  • So - any idea how could I report this to Garmin? I completely lost trust in my watch now since I don't know what caused this major issue.

    hi,

So - any idea how could I report this to Garmin?

    that is quite simple Wink

call Garmin Support and tell them about your mishap

    or

report it to the beta team (all info on how to, in the beta thread)

    or

report it here or a new thread with all additional info and files needed to help find the cause

    perhaps it is

    • the gpx file
    • the workout
    • the combination of both gpx and workout
    • procedure starting an activity
    • etc
    • etc

what can we all learn from this mishap, preventing it happening again

    or

Not much to add. Perhaps just it would be interesting to know how much space there was free on the storage.

  • Thanks for suggestions :) I sent email to support about this.

Here is step by step what happened:

    • right before activity I've built a GPX file (attached) with Locus Map; it contained planned route
    • I've imported the GPX file with Garmin Explore and synced it back to Instinct
    • went outside, started the activity. Since the workouts are part of training plan they're all in calendar so all I had to do is confirm I'm using the workout (3 x 55 minutes run in Z2 with 5 minutes of rest in between then cooldown until lap press)
    • right before starting the activity (with workout already selected) I went to run options -> nagivate -> course -> start my course
    • got a usual warning that GPX file contains too many waypoints and they will be reduced to 50; confirming resulted in long wait (as usual) and everything was ready
    • went for a run, did not pause, did not change anything apart from using up/down to peek at navigation from workout screen
    • I was looking navigation up every 15 minutes or so - there were no problems, no lost signal etc. HR alerts were coming down ok etc.
    • can't remember exactly when, but close to finish (2-5km from finish) I was on well known area and canceled the course tracking without aborting activity
    • when I reached the cooldown phase I hit lap button after one minute of cooldown (yeah, I know, too short :D) and ~1s later hit start/stop activity button and selected save from menu

Some details that might be useful:

    • using Garmin HR strap; was on all the activity
    • using third party (Adidas) cheapo foodpod to track my cadence
    • a month ago had a similar issue with wrong activity data
    • watch storage had 4MB free so it's definitely no storage issue
    • watch was at full charge
  • I recently had problem with upgrade and freed up memory. While I was downloading fit file from my watch I've seen 4MB of free space there :(

thank you for the additional point

thank you for the detailed steps

    • regarding the memory, this is the same as with your waypoints that are capped at 50 max
    • it is the amount of fit files in the activity folder that makes your watch handling files more or less easy
    • regarding the start of your activity, you go outside and start without waiting for sat fix signal ?
    • I can not find the GPX file as attachement
    • with the memory problem, what did you do to free up memory ?

    happy & safe sporting
