Instinct crash and reboot during activity

Hello!

Anybody else experiencing crashes and reboots during activities/navigations?

I've noticed it happening quite often really, today I was running 12km and it managed to crash twice. True enough the Instinct picks up right where it left but it's still annoying.

Am I the only one with this? Should I worry about it? Ways to work on the issue?

Thanks!

  • Two days ago it crashed as soon as I started my custom weight training. As soon as it rebooted, it started again with no issues.

  • Oh yeah, luckily enough it does restart right where you left, but still it shouldn't crash in the first place.
I'm just wondering if it's a common issue, if it's a software based issue or of I should be worried about my Watch istelf and send it back for replacement.

  • My Instinct reboots during Navigation when any of Waypoint names in the Course is wrong. But it reboots when I approach the waypoint place, not random.

  • Interesting. What do you mean by "Wrong", exactly?

  • The waypoint name can be 15 bytes long. Garmin web connect.garmin.com does not allow names more than 15 characters long, but allows UTF-8  characters, which are 2 bytes long. So a name 15 characters long, containing one 2-byte character breaks the 15bytes limit. When Instinct tries to work with such name, reboot is the result.

So waypoint names like GarminInstinct®Mönchengladbach,  Champs-Élysées, Владимир, Ηράκλειο, etc. are "wrong".

I suppose that the web use "Null-terminated string" , but the ending zero is lost somewhere during transformation of the course .fit file which Instinct makes. So later it reads some bytes following the name string...

  • Same here, but didn't know how many days ago

  • This morning the same power training I've doing for almost 2 years with a 645.

After 20 minutes or so it crashed. After reboot it prompted to resume. After a couple of seconds it crashed again.

On the last attempt i didn't crash but it lost all data about the training, basically it became a 30" repeating timer with nameless exercises. Luckily I was also recording the activity via Polar Beat (I was wearing an H10).

I'm definitely returning the instinct next week. What a poor experience.

  • OK so most definitely isn't just me and my Instinct, which is a good and a bad thing.
I bought this thing only recently and I'm kinda hoping it's something to do with the 7.0 Firmware that can be fixed swiftly with an update.

  • but allows UTF-8  characters, which are 2 bytes long

What  wrote about the reason of the error and limitations, is right - I'd just add an unimportant note about a minor detail - UTF-8 encoded unicode characters are actually long between 1 to 4 bytes, so in fact, if you are not lucky, a single unicode character may add three additional bytes. Not all unicode characters are supported by the Instinct, though, so it is possible that on this specific model the limit of 2 bytes is true. Just noting it, since the same issue is AFAIK a problem on APAC Instinct, and on other Garmin devices as well, and those have often quite different support of unicode characters.

  • Yes, right. But the only UTF-8 character longer than 2 bytes which I have found that Instinct is able to show is  Tm (3 bytes long ). But I did not check all 65536 combinations Relaxed . I suppose that for all languages contained in the Instinct 2-byte characters are enough.
