Can I navigate whilst following a Garmin Coach training plan?

Is it possible to enter navigation mode and get directions whilst doing a scheduled run as part of a Garmin Coach training plan? I am always afraid of pressing a button and ending the run (meaning my training doesn't get properly recorded). It would be useful on longer, straightforward runs to do a new route where directions/waypoints would be helpful.

  • I do it all the time.  Here is what I do.

    1. Press GPS button and select Run activity
    2. Select your workout from your training plan as you normally would
    3. Before you press the GPS button to start the workout, I press and hold the menu button and scroll to Navigation and select the course.
    4. Wait for the course to load
    5. Select "Do Course"
    6. Press the GPS button when ready to start your workout.
  • Also you can start navigation anytime during activity. There are two ways - you can either assign Navigation to a hotkey and hold proper key combination during activity. To assign Navigation to hotkey use:

    1. Hold menu/up
    2. Go to: settings > Hot keys
    3. select desired key combination
    4. select 'Navigation

Second way is to hold menu/up during activity and select navigation from there. I cannot stress enough how I love this in Instinct (dunno if other watches from same price tag support this) - any time I get lost during a crazy forest or crazy mountain run I just boot navigation and can effortlessly find my way. And man, I get lost almost all the time, for sheer fun of using this feature Laughing

  • Yes this watch is outstanding.  I came from a TomTom Adventurer which used a flat functional/menu structure.  So once you had started an activity, you were stuck within that activitiy and not able to apply any other function.  The ability to access most other Instinct functions while in an activity is outstanding.
