Download gpx files from a Instinct

Hi All,

I'm thinking of purchasing a Instinct but I have two question which I 'm hoping someone can answer.

1. Does the Instinct record tracks (i.e. if I go for a hike will it record the route I do like a standard GPS)?  I've read that it has a breadcrumbing functions but everything seems to be on about using this for navigating with.

2. Can you download gpx files from the instinct so you can say then upload to something like OS Maps?

Thanks

Dave

  • Absolutely records tracks.  Can also save/record waypoints.

You'll be able to grab the gpx file from Garmin Connect after the watch has been sync'd either through the phone app (Bluetooth) or USB connection to a computer after your recorded activity.

That's the one thing which has stopped me from purchasing the Instinct at the moment.  Do you have a Instinct yourself how do you find it? whats the battery life like?

I usually track me routes at the moment either manually on OS Maps or a take my Oregon 450 out.  The 450 is good but the battery life isn't that great and I find myself either swapping batteries or missing half the tour..  OS Maps is good but it the time to draw out the route especially  if your knackered after a day on the hills. And the fact its got a lot of sport functions as well like indoor swimming etc is great.

    Thanks

    Dave

  • I do own an Instinct.  It replaced my TomTom Adventurer.  The Instinct is 10 times the watch that the TomTom is.  Battery life if good.  Up to two weeks.  I get a little less because I track many runs and bike rides (road and mountain) throughout the week.

Last week my wife and I hiked a few trails at some of our State Parks.  I pre-loaded the trails on both my Instinct and my GPSMap 64 for a comparison.  I configured both devices with similar data fields and found that I'd feel comfortable using either to navigate via a pre-loaded track.  Of course, the Instinct does not offer the visual maps that the 64 does, so If I was concerned about hiking off trail and needed to know topo and other natural features, I'd certainly use the 64.

The Instinct is also compatible with Garmin Basecamp, so it's easy to download tracks and waypoints to the watch.

This thing is great for tracking hikes! Does anyone have more thorough instructions for getting the files off the instinct and into something like arcmap?

  • You can download a gpx file from Garmin Connect (web) once your hike has been sync'd via Garmin Connect (phone) or Garmin Express (USB direct PC/Mac).  I'm sure the gpx file can be uploaded to Arcmap.
