Well, you could perform a master reset of the watch, but that's what Sitronen meant when speaking about a meaningful way. It is not one.
Much better is simply noting the step number before you start, and then again when you end. Or, if you want a solution not requiring you taking notes, you can configure a hot key for taking a screenshot of the watch, taking one at the start, and another one at the end. Or you can do it on your phone, as well.
It is an automated process that takes place at midnight that you cannot manipulate since more and more insurance companies and employers are requiring people to wear their watch and demonstrate steps taken each day to reduced rates and rewards.
What should I do if allready in the morning the counting steps staret with 520 steps and I havent done 1 step yet, how to reset the step counting?
Im having the same issue - it is not resetting at midnight as it is supposed to do but have found no answers anywhere. Since its only a week old I am going to factory reset it, start over, and see if that does it. Otherwise it is super annoying!
I did the factory reset, and started over, and the steps starts now by 0. However it is not counting the steps, it jumps from 0 to 54 then they jump 405, so the steps counting is not functioning - very annoying, as I bought the watch as well for the reason of steps counting.
However it is not counting the steps, it jumps from 0 to 54
That's the designed behavior - to avoid counting random movements as steps, there needs to be a minimal number or steps detected, before the counter starts incrementing. And in the moment the continuity of the steps is confirmed, the previously hidden steps are included.
In other words, the watch will never start incrementing 1, 2, 3, ... steps, but rather goes directly to some 20 steps, and only then it goes on incrementing by smaller values (as long as the walking or running continues).
then they jump 405
Not sure about this, but if it happened just after you have reset the watch, then if the count was already synced to Garmin Connect, then it probably synced back to the watch.
Having couple of hundreds steps in the morning is not unusual - for example nightly walks to the toilet, having sex in the night, or even brushing the teeth in the morning (with the hand wearing the watch), or other rhythmic movement may be easily detected as steps.
What about the issue of it not resetting at midnight back to zero for the next days count?
I never heard about this problem here on the forum at Instinct 1st gen, but some people reported it at Instinct 2. Mine is behaving correctly, though. If you have Instinct 2, then the changelog at Beta Version 14.11 - Available OTA - Announcements - Instinct 2s/2/2X/Crossover - Garmin Forums claims that it was fixed in the last beta firmware version. It is around to be released in the next few weeks. So you can either install the beta firmware, or wait for the public release.
If you own Instinct 1st gen (you are posting to the forum for it), then you'll need to contact the Support.
Thank you very much for the explanations and your help. I have 2 weeks old Instinct S2, and I am really dissapointed with the step counter. It seems to count my moovements of the hand while working on computer with my wantch on the wrist - which is really not what I wanted. Yesterday the jumps of the steps were from 98 diretcly to 560 and then to 2000 - the last one not working on the computer - which really doesnt make sense. I will try to download the Beta version, and see if it helps. Once again - your comments are very appreciated!
